Mainland China has a large and diverse higher-education system covering comprehensive universities, specialist institutions, technology-focused universities, medical schools, arts academies and Sino-foreign cooperative institutions. The Ministry of Education’s list dated 17 June 2026 records 3,196 higher-education institutions, including 1,412 undergraduate institutions. International applicants can find Chinese-taught and selected English-taught programmes, but availability, entry standards, fees and deadlines vary by university and programme. Students should confirm the institution’s current MOE status, the programme’s teaching language and professional recognition, and any home-country licensing rules before applying. This page covers mainland China; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have separate systems and immigration arrangements.
