🛂 Visa & Immigration
Student Visa Process

Checked 22 August 2026: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and third-country nationals follow different entry and residence rules. A non-EU full-time university student may apply for temporary residence for study, generally through the responsible Slovak diplomatic mission or an eligible Foreign Police route. Current IOM guidance says study residence may be granted for the expected study duration up to six years, but there is no legal entitlement. Admission evidence, passport, criminal-record and financial documents, translations and other route-specific evidence may be required. A short-stay visa, national visa and temporary residence are different procedures; confirm the correct route with the Slovak mission and Foreign Police before travel.

Completed official temporary-residence application form in Slovak.

Valid passport and compliant photographs.

Current proof of the purpose of stay, normally a qualifying admission confirmation.

Criminal-record evidence where required, within the current validity window.

Accepted Slovak translations, legalisation or apostille where required.

Current proof of sufficient financial coverage where required.

Route-specific accommodation, insurance or medical evidence and later post-arrival documents.

Residence-card fee and any consular or visa evidence applicable to the applicant's nationality and route.

Checked 22 August 2026: current IOM guidance says the Foreign Police decides a complete study temporary-residence application within 90 days. Document collection, authentication, translation and appointment availability add preparation time.

Checked 22 August 2026: the current IOM study page lists residence-card issuance/delivery at EUR 10 within 30 days or EUR 39 within 2 business days. Translation, authentication, medical, insurance and visa costs may be separate.
