How Much Does It Cost to Study in Brazil? Tuition, Living Expenses, and Extra Costs

Tuition depends on the institution, course, applicant category and route.

There is no reliable single price for studying in Brazil. Tuition depends on the institution, course, applicant category and route. Living costs depend on city, neighbourhood, housing and commute. Build your estimate from a dated written fee schedule and the campus where you have an offer.

A useful official illustration—not a national average—comes from USP’s School of Economics, Business and Accounting in São Paulo. Its accommodation guidance reports average private student residence prices of about BRL 2,150 per month for a shared room and BRL 2,750 for a single room, plus outside meals at around BRL 30–50 each. The resulting rough monthly combination of a room and one such meal each day is BRL 3,050–4,250, before transport, utilities, phone, study materials, insurance, leisure or travel. The page gives no academic-year price guarantee. Obtain a current written quotation and check the contract before using those figures in your budget.

Your arrival budget should also cover application and document costs, certified translations or apostilles when required, visa and residence processing, the CRNM card, flight, initial accommodation and a deposit. Brazilian consular visa fees can depend on nationality and consular post. The Federal Police’s study-residence checklist, updated in February 2026, lists BRL168.13 for residence-authorisation processing and BRL204.77 for issuing the CRNM, when applicable. Together that is BRL372.90; exemptions and renewal charges must be checked for your case. These charges are separate from a consular visa fee.

For funding, PEC-G can offer free places to eligible applicants from participating countries under the current notice, but do not treat it as a universal award or assume that living expenses are covered. Make three budgets: minimum, realistic and contingency. Use the actual campus commute and housing offer, then update the spreadsheet when the institution confirms the fee category.

Separate recurring costs from arrival costs

A study budget for Brazil should distinguish a typical month from the amount needed before classes begin. Recurring expenses may include rent, utilities, food, local transport, mobile service, study materials and health-related costs. Arrival expenses can include international travel, a room deposit, temporary accommodation, basic household items, document translation or legalisation, and required registration fees. A student may have enough for the average month but still lack the cash needed to arrive and secure housing, so track the two totals separately.

Use a city-specific estimate and label its source. The FEA-USP accommodation page is an example from one school and location, and its figures should be checked for date, room type and what is included. Do not apply a São Paulo estimate to another city or treat a single campus example as a country average. Collect several current listings near your actual campus and compare private room, shared room and university housing where available. Record deposit, lease term, utilities, furnishings, internet and transport.

Build a realistic annual plan

Create three scenarios: a basic plan using confirmed expenses, a likely plan using the housing option you expect to secure, and a stress plan with higher rent or an unexpected trip. Include tuition or course charges if applicable, and ask the institution whether international applicants pay administrative or student-service fees. Convert estimates into the currency in which you will fund them and update the exchange rate before making a transfer. Include transfer fees and avoid presenting exchange conversions as fixed costs.

A worked planning example can use categories without pretending to quote a national price: estimate 12 months of rent plus utilities, add 12 monthly food and transit amounts, then add one-time travel, deposit, insurance and document expenses. Put a named official estimate or current room listing beside each input. If a number has no reliable source, mark it as an assumption and test a higher value. This gives you a transparent calculation that can be revised when the university confirms a fee or landlord provides a contract.

Treat funding according to its written terms

If you are selected for PEC-G, distinguish tuition-free study from maintenance support. The programme’s current guidance and selection notice control the benefits; a place should not be described as a full living scholarship unless the award explicitly says so. Determine who will fund housing, food, insurance, travel and emergency needs, and when that funding will be available. If you have a separate scholarship, check duration, renewal criteria, payment timing and whether it can be combined with another award.

Do not make essential expenses depend on a job you have not secured. Confirm immigration conditions for work and ask the institution about timetable demands. A full-time degree or language course may make a work schedule difficult even when some employment is permitted. If a sponsor supports you, agree in writing on the amount, transfer frequency and what happens if costs rise. Keep proof of funds and scholarship documents in the format required by the responsible authority.

Review the budget before every commitment

Before accepting, request a current fee statement, housing information and a clear list of charges due at enrolment. Ask whether a deposit is refundable and what happens if a visa or residence application is delayed. Check the Polícia Federal page for current study-residence fees and required documents, since government charges can change. Retain receipts, rental contracts and written estimates. Recalculate when the academic year, exchange rate or housing plan changes. A realistic budget is a living plan tied to your chosen campus, not a single national figure.

Questions students often ask

Is BRL 3,050–4,250 a national cost estimate? No. It combines a São Paulo housing estimate with one outside meal per day and excludes many costs.

Does public university status guarantee free tuition for everyone? Do not assume so. Ask the institution for written fees and applicant category; PEC-G is a separate eligibility-based route.

Turn estimates into a budget you can update

Separate known fees from prices that change by city and contract. Put tuition, application charges, insurance and official immigration fees in one group, using the current institution or government page. Put rent, utilities, food and transport in another group, using current listings near the campus. Mark the date and conditions for every amount. A USP FEA housing estimate is tied to that school and place; it should not be used as the price for another city or university.

Make a monthly total and an arrival total. The monthly plan can include rent, power, water, internet, meals, transport, mobile service, books and health costs. The arrival plan can include airfare, accommodation deposit, temporary lodging, household essentials, document translations and local registration. Add a reserve for price changes and an unexpected trip. If a scholarship or sponsor is involved, compare payment dates with the dates when each expense is due. A tuition waiver does not automatically provide funds for the first month.

A helpful scenario exercise uses low, expected and high housing costs drawn from real listings. Do the same for transport if the campus is far from available rooms. This avoids inventing a national price and reveals which assumption drives the total. Recalculate after receiving the formal fee statement and lease. If the budget only works when every estimate is at its lowest or a job begins immediately, seek another funding source or rethink the location before committing.
