Will a Degree from Brazil Be Recognised in Your Home Country?

Recognition is decided by the country where you intend to use the qualification, and sometimes by a professional regulator.

Recognition is decided by the country where you intend to use the qualification, and sometimes by a professional regulator. A Brazilian degree is not automatically accepted for every purpose abroad. Before enrolling, ask the authority in your home or destination country whether it recognises the institution, degree level, study mode and programme. For regulated professions, check licensing exams, supervised practice, language requirements and any required local courses.

In Brazil, the starting point is course legality. The Ministry of Education says e-MEC is the official public register for higher-education institutions and courses. It includes institutional details, authorising acts and quality indicators. Search the exact institution and course, including campus and delivery mode; a university’s general reputation does not establish the current status of every programme.

Keep the evidence you may later need: admission and graduation records, transcripts, course descriptions, credit hours, internship or thesis details and certified translations. Ask the institution how it issues a diploma and transcript and whether documents can be apostilled. If you plan to continue to postgraduate study, ask target universities what they require for credential evaluation.

Recognition can be purpose-specific. An employer may assess a qualification differently from a licensing body or graduate school. Obtain written guidance from the authority that will make the decision, ideally before paying a deposit.

Understand what “recognised” means in Brazil

Recognition depends on the purpose of the qualification. For someone studying in Brazil, first check that the institution and exact course have the appropriate status in e-MEC. A register result is an important verification step, but it does not determine whether another country will accept the degree or whether a professional regulator will grant a licence. Academic admission, employer screening, public-sector eligibility and professional practice can each involve different rules.

For graduates who later want to use a foreign degree in Brazil, the Ministry of Education distinguishes revalidation of undergraduate diplomas from recognition of graduate degrees. Its guidance says that undergraduate revalidation is handled by an eligible Brazilian public university with a recognised course in the same or equivalent area, while master’s and doctoral recognition follows a different route. The university evaluates the request and may require supporting information about the foreign institution, curriculum and study record. Do not assume a foreign diploma is automatically valid in Brazil or that a government office will stamp it centrally.

Keep the records an evaluator may need

Save the official course plan, full transcript, diploma, course descriptions, duration, contact or workload information, assessment and internship records. Keep syllabi from the version of the curriculum you completed, because course titles can be reused while content changes. If documents are issued in another language, check whether certified translation, apostille or consular legalisation is required for the future process. Store proof of the awarding institution’s legal name and the exact campus.

For a Brazilian degree intended for use abroad, identify the receiving authority before enrolment. Ask the target university whether it evaluates foreign academic credentials directly or requires an external evaluation. For a regulated profession, contact the regulator in the country where you intend to practise and ask about subject coverage, clinical or supervised hours, examinations, language proficiency and licensing. Request the requirements in writing. A degree may be accepted for postgraduate study yet still require additional professional steps.

Use official channels for the relevant process

For foreign undergraduate degrees seeking validity in Brazil, the Ministry of Education points applicants to Plataforma Carolina Bori and participating universities. The public information can help locate institutions and explain the procedure, but the university assesses each request. Requirements and fees can vary by institution. Confirm whether the process is open for your subject, what documents must be uploaded and whether translations or authenticated copies are needed. Avoid paying an intermediary who promises automatic approval.

For a Brazilian qualification leaving the country, use the relevant national recognition information centre or receiving authority. The ENIC-NARIC network can explain national procedures, but the institution or professional body that will make the decision determines the result. If the purpose is employment, ask the employer whether it uses a particular evaluator. If the purpose is a visa, use the immigration authority’s document rules.

Ask a precise question before paying a deposit

Send the receiving authority the exact award title, institution, course link, campus, duration and study mode. Ask what evidence is required and whether any element of the programme could prevent recognition. This is more useful than asking whether “a Brazilian degree” is recognised worldwide. Recognition is case-specific, and the correct authority can tell you how your particular qualification will be treated for the stated purpose.

Plan recognition as part of course selection

If you have a specific career destination, ask its regulator to review the curriculum before you enrol. Provide required and elective courses, workload, practical training and the exact institution and campus. Ask whether a translation or course-by-course evaluation will be needed after graduation. If you plan to continue to a master’s, request advice from that receiving university instead. Save the response with the current programme plan. A degree can be valid in Brazil and still require an external evaluation abroad, so the intended use determines which authority to contact.

Keep the recognition decision tied to its purpose

A family may ask whether a degree is recognised, but the answer changes depending on whether the student wants a master’s place, public-sector employment, private employment or a licence. Write the purpose in one sentence and contact that decision-maker. Ask whether the institution and course must be listed in a particular register, whether the evaluator needs detailed course content, and whether a professional examination or supervised practice applies. This focused request reduces the chance of relying on broad advertising language that does not address your intended use.

Questions students often ask

Does e-MEC replace foreign credential evaluation? No. It helps check the Brazilian provider and course. Your destination country decides how it evaluates the qualification.

Is a recognised university enough for a regulated profession? Not always. The professional regulator may require additional training, exams or supervised practice.
