Can You Stay and Work in Canada After Graduation?

Possibly, but a Canadian degree does not automatically grant permission to remain or work.

Possibly, but a Canadian degree does not automatically grant permission to remain or work. The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is a common route for eligible graduates, yet eligibility depends on the exact institution, programme, study history, language evidence and, for some programmes, field-of-study requirements. If post-study work is part of your decision, verify the programme before paying a deposit.

Check the exact programme, not only the college name

The institution must be a designated learning institution and the particular programme must meet PGWP rules. A school’s DLI status alone does not make every course eligible. IRCC’s general criteria include completing an eligible programme of at least eight months (or 900 hours for Quebec credentials), maintaining full-time status in each semester except potentially the final term, and applying within 180 days after written confirmation of completion. Personal circumstances and programme category can add requirements.

Most applicants now need to provide language results. Some non-degree programmes also have a field-of-study requirement linked to occupations in long-term shortage. Rules and programme lists can change; save the dated IRCC page and recheck before enrolment and again before applying. Do not treat a recruiter’s promise or an old forum post as evidence of eligibility.

Language and field-of-study rules

For PGWP applications subject to the language requirement, IRCC distinguishes the credential categories. Bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four skills and have no field-of-study requirement. Other university programmes also use level 7, while other college, polytechnic and non-university programmes use level 5. For those non-degree categories, an eligible field of study is required where the study-permit application was submitted on or after 1 November 2024. Flight-school and historical exceptions have separate rules. Check the official categories and accepted tests rather than using your admission score as a substitute.

Possible permit length and limits

IRCC says PGWP length depends on study level and duration and is limited by passport validity. A qualifying master’s programme of at least eight months may support a PGWP of up to three years even if the course was shorter than two years, if all other criteria are met. For other programmes under two years, the permit may be valid for up to the programme’s length; a programme of two years or more may support up to three years. These are maximum possibilities, not guarantees.

Prepare the transition early

Track your study-permit expiry and request completion letters and transcripts promptly. The 180-day PGWP filing window does not itself extend temporary status. If your permit will expire before final marks arrive, IRCC describes options such as applying for a visitor record or leaving Canada; confirm what applies to your case before acting. Work while an application is pending is allowed only when the exact IRCC conditions are met.

A PGWP is generally a one-time opportunity, not permanent residence or a job offer. If you are not eligible, other work-permit categories may exist, with their own criteria. Consult official IRCC guidance or a licensed immigration professional for an individual case.

Does every Canadian graduate qualify? No. The institution, programme and applicant’s study and application history all matter.

Can a short master’s support a three-year PGWP? A qualifying master’s programme of at least eight months may support up to three years, subject to all other criteria.

Does a PGWP guarantee permanent residence? No. Any later immigration route is assessed separately.

Verify the exact programme in IRCC’s DLI and PGWP records

The first screening step is to find the school in IRCC’s DLI list and then confirm the specific programme is marked eligible. The government states that not every programme at a DLI qualifies. Check the campus and programme name, not only the institution brand, and save the result with its date. If the page and the school’s recruitment material disagree, ask the registrar or international office to identify the official IRCC programme entry in writing before paying a non-refundable deposit.

IRCC’s current eligibility rules also depend on when the study-permit application was submitted, the credential and the study history. For bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates, IRCC says there is no field-of-study requirement, but applicants subject to the language rule need CLB 7 or NCLC 7 across the four skills. For other university credentials, language level 7 applies and a field-of-study condition may apply based on the study-permit application date. For other college, polytechnic and non-university programmes, the language threshold is level 5 and the field rule may apply. The official page states that no eligible fields will be added or removed during 2026; always confirm the rules at the time you apply.

Protect eligibility throughout the programme

A PGWP decision considers more than the final diploma. Keep registration letters, transcripts, dates of full-time study, authorised leave approvals, transfer records and proof of graduation. Ask the registrar how quickly it can issue the completion letter and final transcript because the application window is measured from written confirmation of completion. If you change campuses, programmes or study loads, check with IRCC before assuming the original eligibility still applies. The school can provide records, but IRCC makes the permit decision.

Check passport expiry as well. IRCC may issue a permit only up to passport validity, so an otherwise eligible graduate can receive a shorter document if the passport expires first. The route is generally a one-time permit and does not itself provide permanent residence, a job or a regulated-profession licence. Plan for language-test costs, application timing and professional recognition separately.

Make a decision before paying a deposit

If Canadian work experience is central to your return on investment, place the official DLI programme listing beside the offer letter and the latest PGWP rule. Ask the institution to confirm the programme code and any curriculum changes that could affect it. Save the response, but remember that only IRCC decides eligibility. If your chosen credential is not listed, compare another eligible programme or build a budget that does not depend on a PGWP.

Do not confuse ordinary off-campus student work with work after graduation. IRCC’s student work rules allow eligible students to work within defined limits while studying; the graduate transition has a separate application and conditions. If you are completing a co-op or internship, verify that the required work permit is in place. A work placement, employer offer or recruiter’s statement cannot substitute for the relevant immigration document.
