How Much Does It Cost to Study in Egypt? Tuition, Living Expenses, and Extra Costs

The cost of studying in Egypt for an international student cannot be reduced to one national figure.

The cost of studying in Egypt for an international student cannot be reduced to one national figure. Tuition varies by public, national, private, technological or international provider; by programme and study level; and by nationality, scholarship and year. Fees may be charged in Egyptian pounds, US dollars, euros or another currency. Living costs also change by campus location, housing, commute and personal routine. Build the budget from the chosen university’s current written invoice, then add housing, deposit, utilities, food, transport, health cover, immigration, flights, books and emergency funds. Provider budgets can be useful examples, but they are not Egyptian averages. Recheck every amount and refund rule immediately before payment.

Student budget at a glance

Cost group Include Main risk
Tuition Credits/semester/year, annual increase Comparing different billing periods
Admission Application, coordination, registration, tests Assuming every fee is refundable
Housing Rent, deposit, utilities, furnishings Choosing before confirming campus
Daily life Food, phone, internet, laundry, local travel Using an old exchange rate
Health Insurance, medicines, co-payments Assuming one university’s plan is national
Immigration/travel Visa, residence, registration, flights Booking before the route is clear
Contingency Price change, emergency travel, replacement documents No buffer

Why there is no single Egypt tuition fee

Egypt has several institution types and fee models. A fee can be per credit, semester or year, and may exclude registration, laboratory, transport, insurance or student-service charges. The currency shown to domestic students may not be the currency charged to an international applicant.

Ask the provider for a dated schedule naming the programme, intake, nationality category, billing period and payment recipient. A verbal range or an agent’s screenshot is not a final invoice.

How to read a university fee schedule

  • Confirm whether tuition is fixed or can increase.

  • Separate refundable deposits from non-refundable fees.

  • Check whether a quoted amount assumes a particular credit load.

  • List mandatory insurance, laboratory, technology and transport charges.

  • Read withdrawal, deferral and refund conditions.

  • Verify the bank account or official online payment page.

What can official provider budgets tell you?

The American University in Cairo’s 2025/26 Cost of Attendance page itemises tuition, fees, books, room, board, transport and personal expenses for a specific financial-aid purpose. It explicitly says the table applies to AUC degree students seeking US federal loans. That makes it a transparent planning example—not a price benchmark for Cairo, public universities or Egypt as a whole.

Use provider data to understand categories, not to invent a national average. Ask your chosen institution for its own current figures.

Housing and move-in costs

Housing can include university residence, a managed student building, a room in a shared flat or a private apartment. Budget for a deposit, first rent, utilities, internet, furnishings, agent charges where lawful, and transport to the exact campus. Capacity is not guaranteed simply because a university advertises residence.

A cheaper flat can become expensive if the daily commute is long. Confirm timetable, teaching site and realistic peak-hour travel before signing.

Food, transport and personal expenses

Build these from your own routine. Decide how often you will cook, whether campus meals are included, which transport is realistic, and what phone/data plan you need. The Egyptian Tourism Authority identifies trains, buses, taxis and ride-hailing among common modes, but a student’s safe and practical option depends on location and time.

Record costs in the currency actually paid and keep a second view in the currency funding your studies. Exchange movements can change the family’s real cost even when the invoice is unchanged.

Visa, residence and health costs

Tourism e-Visa fees are not a complete student-immigration budget. Entry, passport registration, student residence, re-entry and late charges can be separate. AUC publishes current institution-supported residence figures, but these remain an AUC example and should be confirmed for the applicant’s route.

Health cover also varies. Some universities mandate their own insurance; others publish different arrangements. Include premiums, exclusions, medicines and emergency access.

How to handle scholarships and discounts

Enter a scholarship only after receiving a written award. Record what it covers, its duration, renewal conditions and exclusions. A “full scholarship” may cover tuition but exclude registration, residence, travel, books, insurance and living costs.

Keep a base budget without the award and a confirmed budget with it. This prevents a conditional discount from hiding an unaffordable plan.

Build low, expected and high budget scenarios

A single total gives a false sense of certainty. Prepare three versions instead. The low case should include only reductions that are already confirmed. The expected case should use the university's written fee schedule and a realistic housing choice. The high case should add exchange-rate movement, a longer housing search, deposits, document rework and emergency travel.

Use the same currency and time period in every line. If tuition is quoted in one currency and rent in another, record the exchange rate and date used rather than silently converting. Recalculate before paying a deposit. For expenses that depend on personal habits, set a weekly limit and test it against a full month.

Finally, check when money is due. A programme can be affordable over a year but still difficult if tuition, housing deposits, insurance and residence costs all fall before arrival. Your cash-flow plan should show the payment date, refund terms and evidence you will receive for each major charge.

Common budgeting mistakes

  • Comparing annual tuition with a per-semester or per-credit quote.

  • Using an undated exchange rate or third-party national average.

  • Leaving out deposits, registration, insurance and flights.

  • Assuming housing is guaranteed.

  • Counting a scholarship before a formal award.

  • Ignoring annual tuition increases and long programme duration.

  • Sending money before confirming payee and refund rules.

What to verify before you decide

  • Current tuition, billing period and currency for your programme.

  • All compulsory non-tuition fees and deposits.

  • Annual increase, withdrawal, deferral and refund rules.

  • Housing availability, total move-in cost and commute.

  • Insurance, entry, residence and travel expenses.

  • Scholarship coverage and renewal conditions.

  • A realistic contingency fund.

Use current public programme pages on Univs for listed fees only as a starting point, then confirm the final invoice before using the application route.

How much does it cost to study in Egypt?

There is no reliable single figure. Request a current programme-specific fee schedule and build a campus-specific living budget. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford.

Are public universities always cheaper?

They may have different fee structures, but “public” alone does not establish the international fee, currency or total cost. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford.

What currency will I pay?

It depends on the provider and applicant category. Confirm the invoiced currency and approved payment method. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford.

Is university accommodation included in tuition?

Usually it should be treated as separate unless the written offer explicitly includes it. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford.

Can fees increase after enrolment?

They can, depending on institutional policy. Ask for the rule and model a multi-year increase. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford.

Does a scholarship cover living expenses?

Not necessarily. Read the award’s inclusions, exclusions and renewal conditions. Record each amount with its academic year, currency, student category and inclusions, then compare written schedules and current housing quotes before deciding what you can afford. Confirm which costs remain your responsibility before accepting the award.

Conclusion

Egypt can offer very different price points, but affordability should be proved with a complete, dated budget. The strongest comparison uses the exact invoice, the exact campus and a cash-flow plan for the whole programme. If a critical fee or refund term is missing, the budget is not ready for a decision.
