Student Visas and Residence Permits in Egypt: Requirements, Costs, and Proof of Funds

The official Egypt e-Visa portal covers eligible nationalities and tourism e-Visas; it does not by itself settle a degree student’s residence route.

An Egyptian entry visa and a student residence process are separate. International students should first check the entry route for their nationality, passport and purpose, state study as the purpose where instructed, and then follow the host university’s process for lawful student residence after arrival. The official Egypt e-Visa portal covers eligible nationalities and tourism e-Visas; it does not by itself settle a degree student’s residence route. Current university guidance shows that passport registration, security approval, residence fees and timing can differ by nationality. An admission letter does not guarantee a visa, entry or residence approval. Confirm the current route with the Egyptian mission, competent authorities and host institution before booking travel.

Visa and residence at a glance

Arrival Present passport, visa and supporting evidence Entry remains at border-authority discretion
Passport registration Nationality-specific reporting Whether a short deadline applies
Student residence Maintain lawful stay for study Institution-supported process and documents
Travel/re-entry Leave and return during study Residence and re-entry validity

How the tourism e-Visa route works

The official Egypt e-Visa FAQ, defines an e-Visa as a document permitting entry and travel for nationalities listed on the portal. It lists tourism e-Visas only, says the passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival, and states that port authorities may refuse entry even to an e-Visa holder. It lists tourist fees of US$30 single-entry and US$65 multiple-entry; these are tourism charges, not a student residence fee.

A tourism e-Visa is not automatically the correct long-term study route. Check the purpose and duration with the Egyptian mission and university.

Does every student use the same entry route?

No. Nationality, passport type, residence history, purpose and current security requirements can change the route. Some travellers may be eligible for an e-Visa or visa on arrival; others need a visa from an Egyptian mission or prior approval. Never copy another student’s route without checking your own.

Students travelling with a parent, spouse or child should ask about each person separately. A dependant's entry and residence evidence may require relationship documents and may not follow the student's timetable. Do not book on the assumption that one approval covers the whole family.

Pre-departure documents and checks

  • Passport with the required validity.

  • Correct entry visa or official confirmation for the route.

  • Formal admission, nomination or enrolment evidence.

  • University contact and residence-process instructions.

  • Verified Egyptian address or housing evidence where requested.

  • Authenticated academic and civil documents needed for registration.

  • Funds and official payment evidence for required procedures.

Registration and residence steps after arrival

The host institution’s international office should explain passport registration and student-residence steps. The American University in Cairo’s guidance, updated 10 August 2026, tells students to initiate the residence process through its Business Support Office and notes that some nationalities must register passports within seven days. It lists government fees of EGP 7,100 for a residency visa or extension and EGP 850 for re-entry, plus a registration fee for specified nationalities. These are AUC-published, dated examples, not a universal office, deadline or fee schedule for every student.

Act promptly. Do not wait for an entry period to expire while assuming the university has submitted something on your behalf.

Confirm where and when to report, which originals are presented, whether copies or photographs are required, and what evidence shows an application is pending. If the university collects a passport temporarily, request an official receipt and ask how urgent travel would be handled.

A Sudanese-student example: documents and residence filing

The Sudanese embassy’s cultural office guide for 2026 describes a nationality-specific sequence: preliminary nomination through Study in Egypt, the applicable security/entry approval, arrival and university enrolment evidence, followed by a study-residence application to Egypt’s General Administration of Passports, Immigration and Nationality at Abbassia or its provincial branches.

For its Sudanese-student audience, the guide lists a passport valid for at least six months with copies, a current officially stamped university enrolment certificate addressed to passports, four white-background photographs, the official fee receipt and housing evidence such as an authenticated lease or university-residence statement. It advises starting promptly after arrival and renewal at least a month before the card’s expiry.

These are instructions from Sudan’s cultural mission for its students. They do not establish an identical checklist, deadline or entry-security process for other nationalities. Ask your own Egyptian mission and university to confirm which documents and filing office apply. Do not treat a pending receipt as unrestricted permission to travel or remain indefinitely; obtain the responsible Egyptian authority’s answer for your case.

Proof of funds needs a case-specific answer

Keep confirmed tuition funding, living funds and any scholarship letter available, and ask the mission whether it requires bank statements, sponsorship evidence or a particular financial period. The university and nationality-specific examples above do not establish one bank-balance threshold for every international student. A tourism eVisa fee is not proof of the funds needed for a degree, and tuition payment does not replace an immigration decision.

Fees and timing

The official e-Visa portal lists tourism e-Visa fees of USD 30 for single entry and USD 65 for multiple entry. These are not student-residence fees. AUC’s published government-fee table lists EGP 7,100 for residency visa/extension and EGP 850 for re-entry, plus passport registration for specified nationalities. These figures are AUC guidance and must be confirmed for your case.

No universal student-residence processing time is published in the sources used here. Nationality-specific security approval can affect timing.

Visa, residence and enrolment are different

Status What it supports What it does not prove
University admission Academic acceptance subject to its terms Entry or residence approval
Entry visa/e-Visa Request to enter for the permitted purpose/period Final border admission or long-term residence
Student residence Lawful stay under the approved study basis General permission to work
Re-entry permission Return under its current terms That an expired residence remains valid

How to manage the process after submission

Keep a dated record of the passport pages, application form, university letter, payment receipt and any document temporarily retained by an authorised office. Ask what proves that an application is pending, whether travel is allowed during the process and how a status update will be communicated. If the passport is needed for another purpose, do not assume it can be recovered immediately.

Set reminders well before any visa, entry permission or residence document expires. An academic calendar does not extend immigration permission. Tell the university promptly if you change address, programme, study status or passport, because a change may require a new action.

Dependants, transfers, late arrivals and interrupted studies can follow different routes. These cases should be raised before travel where possible. Save the current authority or university response rather than relying on instructions received by another student in a different year.

Common mistakes and risks

  • Using a tourism e-Visa without checking whether it fits the study plan.

  • Assuming admission guarantees entry.

  • Ignoring passport-registration obligations.

  • Waiting until status expiry to start residence steps.

  • Booking non-refundable travel during unresolved processing.

  • Leaving Egypt without checking re-entry requirements.

  • Using unofficial payment channels or outdated fee figures.

What to verify before you decide

  • The entry route for your nationality, passport and study purpose.

  • Passport validity and required supporting documents.

  • Whether passport registration applies and its deadline.

  • Which university office manages student residence.

  • Current fees, processing conditions and lawful-stay deadlines.

  • Rules for travel and re-entry during study.

  • What happens if approval is delayed.

Use Univs’ verified contact route for general platform questions, but rely on Egyptian authorities and the host institution for the legal decision.

Keep the written admission, travel document and residence record consistent. A spelling difference, expired passport or unreported change of address can create avoidable questions even when the underlying study plan is genuine.

Is an Egypt e-Visa a student visa?

The official portal describes tourism e-Visas. Do not assume that this is the complete degree-study route; confirm entry and residence requirements. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures.

Does an admission letter guarantee a visa?

No. Admission and immigration are separate decisions. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures. The embassy assesses immigration requirements and may request additional evidence.

How long must my passport be valid?

The e-Visa portal requires at least six months from arrival for that route. A mission or university may ask for more practical validity. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures.

When should I apply for residence?

Follow the host institution’s current instructions promptly after arrival. Do not wait for entry status to expire. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures.

Can I leave Egypt while residence is processing?

Check with the institution and competent authority first; re-entry rules can be separate. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures. Ask how departure affects the pending case and whether re-entry is permitted.

Can Univs guarantee approval?

No. Only the competent Egyptian authorities decide visa, entry and residence matters. Confirm the answer for your nationality and study purpose with the Egyptian mission and host institution, and keep entry permission distinct from later residence procedures. Use official instructions and receipts; no intermediary can replace an authority decision.

Conclusion

The safe approach is to treat immigration as a sequence: correct entry, timely registration, student residence and controlled re-entry. Because the route is personal and volatile, every fee, deadline and nationality rule needs a final check immediately before action.
