Can You Study in English in Australia? Language Requirements and IELTS Alternatives

Monash, for example, states that English is its language of instruction.

Yes, English-taught university study is available in Australia. Monash, for example, states that English is its language of instruction. Your practical task is to establish which evidence your chosen course accepts and whether the same evidence also meets your visa requirements. IELTS is one option, rather than a universal requirement for every applicant.

The university and Home Affairs make separate decisions

A university assesses English for admission to its course. Home Affairs assesses English evidence under the relevant visa rules. Monash explicitly warns international applicants that the two requirements differ. A university waiver cannot be treated as an automatic visa exemption.

Create two rows in your application plan: course admission and visa evidence. For each, record the accepted test or alternative evidence, required scores, result age and submission method. Resolve conflicting advice with the authority responsible for that decision.

What alternatives to IELTS are available?

Monash’s admissions page lists alternatives including TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Its general IELTS Academic minimum is 6.5 overall with no component below 6.0, but some courses require more. The page also describes defined prior-study routes for demonstrating English. These are Monash examples, not a national admission standard.

An English-medium qualification may help only when it meets the provider’s specific conditions. Monash may request an official language-of-instruction letter from the institution’s registrar or another authorised person. Ask admissions whether your exact study history qualifies and what evidence is needed; a school’s informal statement may not settle the question.

Check the test product and delivery format

Home Affairs requires approved visa tests to be taken at a secure testing centre. It does not accept entirely online or at-home tests. This can differ from admission policy: Monash’s list includes IELTS Online, while Home Affairs names that product among the online tests it does not accept for visa purposes.

The visa-approved tests changed on 7 August 2025. Use the current subclass instructions for the score, evidence and validity that apply to your test date. Do not apply an old conversion table or assume a result is valid for every visa. For TOEFL iBT, Home Affairs directs applicants to select the Australia-specific registration pathway.

Plan around the course’s actual conditions

Check all component scores before booking: a suitable overall result can still fail a course’s writing or speaking minimum. If you need an English pathway before the degree, ask for the progression conditions, extra tuition, course sequence and what happens if you do not achieve the required result.

Leave time for preparation and a possible retest. Use matching identity details across your passport, booking and application, and retain the full result report. If you intend to enter a regulated profession, check that regulator’s English requirements separately before relying on the admission score as your long-term target.

Read scores as a profile rather than one number

An overall test score can hide a component that falls below a course threshold. Copy every required component into your comparison and check whether the provider accepts a single sitting, combined results or a particular test date. A nursing, teaching or other professionally oriented course may set standards beyond the university’s general minimum. If a pathway course is proposed, request its progression score and the consequence of missing it before paying a deposit.

Check test validity from the date the relevant authority receives your application, not simply from the date you booked it. University and visa rules can use different windows, accepted products and exemptions. Keep the full score report and confirm how it should be sent. A test provider’s portal result may need to be shared directly; a photo of a screen is not necessarily official evidence. If your passport name includes multiple family names or a different transliteration, align your booking details before test day.

Choose preparation that addresses the actual gap

Use a diagnostic assessment to identify whether your main need is academic vocabulary, listening speed, structured writing or spoken fluency. Prepare against the test format you plan to sit; practice materials for a different version can mislead you about timing and task types. A short weekly schedule with timed tasks and feedback on writing is more informative than repeatedly taking full practice tests without reviewing errors.

If your score is close to the requirement, calculate the retest window and result turnaround before setting an application deadline. Some courses have limited places or fixed commencement dates, so a retest may affect the intake you can enter. Ask the university whether it accepts a later score or whether an English pathway is available. Compare the pathway’s additional fees, length, attendance requirements and progression conditions with taking another test.

Keep the visa decision separate

For a visa application, use Home Affairs’ current approved evidence list and follow its instructions for the exact test product and booking format. Product names can be similar while delivery conditions differ. The current rules require visa-approved tests to be taken at a secure centre; an online option accepted by a university may not qualify for visa evidence. If you qualify for a visa evidence exemption, confirm the exact basis and supporting documents rather than assuming admission approval creates an exemption.

If English evidence is connected to a professional registration plan, consult that regulator as well. The admission score demonstrates that you met a particular university’s entry rule; it does not automatically establish the level needed for registration, workplace communication or another country’s licensing process. Set your target against the next decision you must satisfy, and retain a dated copy of the policy on which that target was based.

Use the result to plan the rest of your study

Meeting an entry threshold is a minimum condition, not evidence that every academic-language task will be easy. Before enrolment, review the course’s reading load, lab or tutorial participation and expected writing. Ask whether the provider offers diagnostic support or academic-skills sessions for international students. If you receive an English-pathway offer, compare its timetable with the main course and make sure the progression score can be achieved before the intended start. Include the pathway’s tuition and living costs in the budget.

Keep a simple evidence record with the test name, delivery format, date, score components, report number and the authority that accepted it. This prevents confusion when university and visa requirements differ. If a rule changes after you take a test, ask the decision-maker whether your existing evidence remains acceptable and save the answer. Never assume that an online test option, combined score or exemption applies because a friend or agent used it in a different application.
