Scholarships in Australia: What Can International Students Apply For?

Australia has government scholarships, university awards and research funding, but they serve different students.

Start your scholarship search with three questions: does the award accept your nationality, does it fund your exact course, and would the confirmed benefit make your budget work? Australia has government scholarships, university awards and research funding, but they serve different students. A tuition discount can be valuable while leaving most of your living expenses to fund yourself.

Australia Awards: check the country rules and return obligation

Australia Awards Scholarships are administered by DFAT for eligible applicants from participating developing countries. They support study at participating Australian universities and TAFE institutions. The country guidance determines which study levels, priority fields and application process apply; the programme is not open to every international applicant.

DFAT lists benefits that generally include full tuition, return economy travel, an establishment allowance, a living contribution and basic OSHC for the award holder. Read the offer’s exclusions and arrangements for dependants. Recipients sign a scholarship contract and must leave Australia for at least two years after completing the scholarship. Failure to comply can create a debt for the scholarship’s accrued cost. That condition matters if your aim is to remain in Australia immediately after graduation.

Use the participating-country and application links on the official DFAT page to check the current round. A past closing date or another country’s rules cannot establish your eligibility.

University coursework awards: a Deakin example

Deakin’s Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship illustrates how a university award works. It offers either half or all tuition for the programme’s normal duration, depending on the outcome. It requires participation in a professional excellence programme. Priority access to campus accommodation is at the student’s own cost and subject to availability.

The award is for new international coursework students who meet course and English requirements. Its page sets an academic eligibility benchmark with qualification-specific equivalents, excludes the Doctor of Medicine, and warns that meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee selection. Check the listed equivalent for your qualification rather than translating a percentage yourself.

The application requires the scholarship form, a 300-word personal statement, two references and the course application with transcripts. Deakin asks applicants to submit at least one month before their programme starts and assesses applications on a rolling basis. Confirm the current instructions before submission. Extra or repeated units beyond the standard programme duration are not covered.

Research funding: apply through the university

The Research Training Program supports research doctorates and research master’s degrees, including overseas students. It is a different route from ordinary coursework scholarships. Eligible universities administer applications and selection; students cannot apply for an RTP scholarship through the Department of Education.

An RTP offer can include a tuition offset, living stipend or research-related allowances. Ask the university which components you have actually been offered, for how long, and under what continuation conditions. A published government stipend range is not your individual award letter.

Compare the award with your full budget

List tuition, rent, food, OSHC, flights, visa costs and any compulsory course expenses. Beside each item, record what the award covers, what you must pay and when the money becomes available. Keep enough funding for the gaps and arrival costs. Count a scholarship only after the written outcome confirms its value and conditions.

Save the official terms and ask what happens if you defer, change courses, take leave or need extra study time. Use the university or government’s verified application channel. A request to pay a personal account in exchange for guaranteed selection is a reason to stop and verify the award independently.

Build an award comparison around eligibility, not headline value

Start a separate row for each award and record the applicant group, eligible degree, selection basis, application route, coverage, duration and continuing conditions. Australia Awards are tied to country programmes and development priorities, while university awards may focus on academic results or broader contribution. RTP funding is designed for research degrees and is administered by universities. These programmes are not interchangeable, and a student should not apply a coursework award's rules to a research candidature.

For a coursework award, compare the scholarship’s duration with the normal course length and your planned credit load. Deakin’s Vice-Chancellor award, for example, states that extra or repeated units beyond the normal duration are not covered. That makes academic progression and the course map part of the funding decision: an apparent full-tuition award may still leave later study costs if your enrolment extends. Confirm whether the award requires a separate application, an unconditional course offer, a particular commencement date or a minimum result to retain it.

Treat the written offer as the budget evidence

Convert the award terms into a payment calendar. Record when tuition is credited, whether a living stipend is paid monthly or by another schedule, and which costs remain yours at arrival. For Australia Awards, check the country-specific handbook and contract for dependants, travel, leave and return obligations. For a university award, ask how deferral, course transfer, part-time study or a leave of absence affects the benefit. A published description is not an individual award decision.

Build a funding plan that includes the gap between an invoice date and a scholarship payment, initial accommodation costs, travel, health cover and course items. Keep a reserve for expenses excluded from the award. Do not count a possible award as available cash while the application is pending. If several awards cannot be held together, ask the provider which one takes precedence before accepting either.

Check authenticity and protect your application

Use the government or university page to reach the application portal, and verify correspondence through contact details you find independently. A genuine competitive scholarship has documented criteria and an assessment route; a payment to an individual promising selection is not evidence of a place or award. Keep copies of submitted statements and references, respect each award’s word and document requirements, and make claims about achievements that referees can support.

For research applicants, contact the intended graduate research faculty about supervisor fit, project availability and the scholarship round before relying on an RTP estimate. Ask whether the advertised stipend is indexed, how long it is paid and what progress reviews apply. Funding and admission can be separate decisions, so request clarity on both. Compare the confirmed package with your own living and research costs rather than assuming that all research candidates receive the same components.

For an applicant planning doctoral or research-master’s study, the funding route should match the research calendar. Ask when the university’s scholarship round opens, whether a supervisor or project must be agreed first, and whether the stipend can be combined with another source. Confirm the expected milestone reviews and what happens if candidature is paused. These details help distinguish a competitive offer from a government programme summary. Keep the final scholarship letter and any contract together with the admission offer; the two documents can set different deadlines and obligations.
