Can You Stay and Work in Denmark After Graduation?

The period is an opportunity to seek work, not a job guarantee, unrestricted full-time work authorisation, permanent residence or automatic conversion to a work permit.

SIRI’s higher-education rules changed on 1 October 2026. For state-approved programmes leading to an academy profession, professional bachelor’s, bachelor’s, part-time master’s or master’s degree, students who applied for their study permit before that date generally receive a six-month or three-year job-seeking period, depending on the route; applications on or after that date generally receive six months or one year. Danish PhD graduates generally receive three years. The permit is usually granted with the study permit, but eligibility and duration depend on application date, programme approval, completion, passport and SIRI’s decision. During an eligible job-seeking period, the standard limited permission is currently 90 hours per month from September to May and full-time work in June, July and August, unless the graduate obtains a separate permit that allows the intended employment. The period is an opportunity to seek work, not a job guarantee, unrestricted full-time work authorisation, permanent residence or automatic conversion to a work permit. Verify the programme’s state approval and personal decision letter.

“Three years after graduation” sounds simple until the conditions are removed from the sentence. The programme, original permit, passport, completion and type of work all affect what a graduate may actually do.

Career planning is stronger when it separates time to search, permission to work limited hours, and the legal route for a full-time job. They are three related but distinct questions.

Denmark post-study routes at a glance

Question Practical answer
Potential six-month, one-year or three-year period Depends on programme, degree and whether the study permit application was before or on/after 1 October 2026; PhD generally three years
Other study routes May receive six months or different/no job-seeking rights
Work during job seeking Normally limited under the current student-style monthly and summer permission
Full-time career role Usually requires a separate qualifying work authorisation before it starts

Eligibility begins with the completed programme

SIRI ties the job-seeking duration to the study permit application date and completed programme: the 1 October 2026 change generally reduces the entitlement for most state-approved higher education applicants from three years to six months or one year. PhD graduates generally receive three years. A short course, non-state-approved programme or different permit category may have other or no job-seeking rights.

Confirm the exact award and state approval before enrolment, then confirm again near completion because rules can change during a degree.

The period may be included with the study permit

SIRI’s 1 October 2026 cutoff separates the prior 6-month/3-year job-seeking schedule from the new 6-month/1-year schedule for most degree routes; PhD graduates generally retain three years. The job-seeking period is generally granted together with the study permit when passport validity allows. A shorter passport can limit the granted duration.

Read the decision letter and expiry date. Do not infer three years merely from the programme title.

Check the application cutoff and permit duration

If you applied before 1 October 2026, a state-approved degree route may generally carry six months or three years of job seeking; if you applied on or after that date, most listed degree routes generally carry six months or one year. PhDs generally carry three years. Confirm the exact duration on SIRI’s personal decision; do not apply the old three-year summary to a new application.

A third-party page that says only “graduates can stay” leaves out the information needed for a lawful plan. Always record the actual start and end dates.

Job-seeking work rights remain limited

During the job-seeking period, SIRI currently describes permission for 90 hours per month from September to May and full-time work in June, July and August. This is not general full-time employment permission across the year.

Eligible graduates can also apply for SIRI’s work permit without limitations during job seeking. A job offer is not required. It covers the listed state-approved degree types; Academy Profession and non-state-approved qualifications are excluded. The permit runs with the job-seeking residence period, rather than extending residence indefinitely. SIRI states that full-time work can start on submission of this particular application; confirm that you meet its conditions before using that rule. The page contains partly overlapping eligibility sections, so obtain case-specific confirmation for your exact qualification and granted period.

Staying beyond the job-seeking period

For residence beyond the job-seeking period, investigate a qualifying employment route. The employer decides whether to offer a role; SIRI assesses the applicable scheme. Salary, working conditions, qualifications and occupation can matter.

Do not start work early because an application has been filed unless official guidance confirms the right to do so in your circumstances. Keep that confirmation with the employment file.

Use study time to build evidence, not promises

Relevant projects, placements, Danish language, professional networks and documented skills can improve readiness, but none guarantees employment. Programme outcomes and labour demand vary by field and year.

For a regulated profession, begin recognition or authorisation checks early; graduation alone may not create the right to practise. Document experience in formats employers and regulators can verify.

Keep a parallel departure and status plan

Track permit expiry, passport validity, address and reporting duties. If no qualifying work route is secured, comply with the departure requirement or identify another lawful route before status expires.

Job-seeking time should not be described as a pathway to permanent residence without separate eligibility under the rules then in force. Save official correspondence and seek qualified advice early if an offer, permit expiry and proposed start date do not align.

Build a lawful graduate transition plan

  • Confirm award type, programme state approval and job-seeking eligibility.

  • Read the granted duration and conditions in the residence decision.

  • Track passport and permit expiry dates well before graduation.

  • Understand limited work hours during the job-seeking period.

  • Map likely full-time roles to current SIRI employment schemes.

  • Prepare a compliant departure or alternative-status plan if no route is secured.

Post-study claims that need correction

  • Assuming every Danish course creates a three-year job-seeking period.

  • Reading job-seeking residence as unrestricted full-time work permission.

  • Treating a job offer as automatic work-permit approval.

  • Ignoring passport validity and the actual expiry printed on the permit.

  • Calling temporary job-seeking time guaranteed permanent residence.

What to verify before you decide

  • The exact completed programme is state-approved and at an eligible degree level.

  • The personal decision grants the claimed job-seeking period and dates.

  • Current work-hour conditions are understood and tracked.

  • A proposed full-time role fits a current employment-permit route.

  • Professional recognition or licensing is addressed where required.

  • Expiry, extension, travel, reporting and departure obligations are clear.

Denmark post-study work FAQs

Can every international graduate stay for three years?

No. The answer depends on the study permit application date. For most specified state-approved degree routes, SIRI generally gives six months or one year for applications on or after 1 October 2026; PhDs generally get three years. Earlier applications may follow the previous 6-month/3-year schedule.

Can I work full time during the job-seeking period?

Not automatically. The standard job-seeking permission is limited during most of the year; a separate work permit may be needed for full-time employment.

Is the job-seeking period granted automatically?

SIRI says it is generally granted with the qualifying study permit when passport validity allows, but the individual decision controls.

What happens if my passport expires earlier?

The granted period may be limited. Check SIRI’s current extension and passport rules before expiry.

Does a Danish degree guarantee a job?

No. Field, language, skills, experience, employer demand and economic conditions all affect recruitment.

Does post-study residence lead automatically to permanent residence?

No. Permanent residence has separate requirements and should not be promised from a temporary study or job-seeking route.

Check the transition before choosing the degree

Stay in the Univs journey: Start with the Univs Denmark country guide, how the Univs research and application journey works and the current Univs programme catalogue.

Ask the institution to confirm the programme’s state-approval status, then read SIRI’s current job-seeking page and employment schemes. Save the evidence but plan for change over a multi-year degree. Build skills and language relevant to actual roles while keeping a lawful alternative if the preferred job does not appear.
