University of Vienna vs TU Wien: Data Science and Informatics Courses, Fees, Admissions, and Student Experience

The University of Vienna and TU Wien both teach quantitative and computing disciplines in Vienna, but their bachelor’s choices answer different questions.

The University of Vienna and TU Wien both teach quantitative and computing disciplines in Vienna, but their bachelor’s choices answer different questions. The University of Vienna’s Mathematical Foundations of Data Science is an English-taught six-semester degree with 180 ECTS. Its curriculum moves from analysis and linear algebra to algorithms, probability, statistics, machine learning, modelling and a project-based seminar. This is a direct choice for applicants focused on computational data analysis.

TU Wien’s Informatics bachelor’s is a six-semester, 180-ECTS BSc taught in German. Its curriculum emphasizes programming, databases, networks, algorithms, software engineering and mathematical/theoretical foundations. Students can pursue specialisations such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity, digital health, software engineering, theoretical computer science and visual computing. TU Wien uses an annual selection procedure for this bachelor’s route. Registration dates, tests and available places change by cycle, so check the current admissions page.

The University of Vienna Data Science programme offers English instruction; TU Wien Informatics requires German and its ranking test also expects strong German comprehension. For non-EU/EEA students, the University of Vienna’s 2026 published schedule lists €752.92 per semester including its Students’ Union fee, before any exemption. TU Wien has its own fee and contribution rules; do not transfer the University of Vienna rate. Request a written fee assessment from both universities.

Choose the University of Vienna if you want a focused data-science curriculum taught in English. Choose TU Wien if you want broader computing foundations, a German-language academic environment and the option to specialise later. Compare admission process, course timetables, language, total fees, housing near the campus and support for international students. Both are Vienna-based, but their course demands and day-to-day academic experience differ.

Questions students often ask

Is TU Wien Informatics in English? No. TU Wien lists German as the teaching language; some individual courses may be offered in English.

Does TU Wien require an entry procedure? Yes. Computer Science bachelor’s applicants take a selection procedure; verify the current annual dates.

How should I compare the fees? Request each institution’s assessment for your citizenship and status; do not transfer one university’s figure to the other.

Compare the two curricula unit by unit

The University of Vienna’s Mathematical Foundations of Data Science is a focused quantitative course: mathematics, algorithms, probability, optimisation, modelling, statistics and machine learning contribute to data analysis. TU Wien’s Informatics bachelor’s is broader in computing, with programming, databases, networks and software engineering alongside theoretical and mathematical foundations. Both include computing, but the distribution and learning purpose differ. Compare the compulsory study plans and note which subjects are core, elective or available only through a later specialisation.

For the Vienna programme, ask how students complete the data-science seminar and what project methods it expects. For TU Wien, check the current sequence of practical programming and core computer-science modules, and whether a preferred specialisation can be pursued within the standard study plan. A specialist title does not guarantee that every machine-learning or security elective will be available each semester. Ask the programme office about capacity, prerequisites and schedule conflicts before building your plan around an optional subject.

Let language and admission procedure influence the choice

The University of Vienna data-science bachelor is presented as English-taught, while TU Wien Informatics is taught in German and has a selection procedure. Confirm the current accepted language evidence and registration steps with each institution. A German requirement is not a small administrative detail: it affects lectures, written examinations, group work and your ability to use local internships. If you need language preparation, include its time and cost and verify that it leads to the evidence the institution accepts.

TU Wien’s annual selection process can include registration, a ranking test and a limited number of places. Use the current admissions notice for dates and format; do not rely on a previous cycle. The University of Vienna also sets its own admission eligibility and documentation. Ask each office how it evaluates your school certificate, mathematics preparation and international transcripts. If a selection exam is required, practise using the published scope and plan travel or remote participation according to the official instructions.

Compare tuition and city costs with the same assumptions

The University of Vienna’s 2026 published amount for the named student category includes tuition and the student-union fee, while exemptions can depend on citizenship or residence status. It is not the fee for TU Wien. Obtain a written calculation from both universities for the same semester and applicant status. Include accommodation, insurance, transport, books, student contributions and any language course. Compare the cost through expected completion, not just the first invoice.

Both institutions are in Vienna, but teaching buildings and daily schedules may differ. Map likely housing to the programme’s locations and test the route at class times. Ask about laboratory or project spaces and whether students must attend at multiple sites. A shared city does not mean identical commute or course routine.

Match the degree with the next step

Choose Vienna Data Science if you want an English-taught mathematics-computing curriculum focused on data analysis and modelling. Choose TU Wien Informatics if you want broad computing foundations, can study in German and are prepared for its selection procedure. Then compare actual vacancies or master’s prerequisites in the field you want. A data-science award does not automatically qualify you for a software-engineering role, and an informatics degree does not guarantee specialist data-science preparation; methods, projects, language and additional experience all matter.

Make the selection procedure part of your preparation plan

TU Wien’s annual selection procedure means that a course shortlist is not an admission outcome. Use the university’s current cycle information to identify registration dates, test format, language expectations, selection stages and any capacity limit. Keep a reminder for each stage and prepare using the published topic outline. Do not apply last year’s dates or ranking-test details to a new cycle. The University of Vienna route has its own application and qualification evaluation; confirm whether your school certificate and mathematics subjects meet that programme’s current rules.

If you are applying to both, prepare separate files and a common record of transcripts, translations, identity documents and test results. Verify whether original or electronically authenticated documents are required, and whether a document can be reused. A German-language admission process may require evidence earlier than the curriculum begins, so plan sufficient time for recognised certification and results.

Compare what a typical week may look like

The Data Science degree’s mathematics-heavy modules and seminar work may mean regular problem sets, coding tasks and quantitative projects. Informatics can include programming practice, theoretical foundations, laboratories and course-specific selections. Ask each department about expected weekly study time, practical-session attendance and exam format. These answers can help you assess fit, but treat them as programme guidance rather than a guarantee of workload for every semester. If you prefer independent coding projects or collaborative labs, identify where each course supports that pattern.

Finally, check whether your intended master’s programmes accept either bachelor’s as preparation. Compare their prerequisite lists with compulsory units, not just elective possibilities. If a target programme requires a particular statistical method, programming background or theory unit, ask whether the bachelor’s course provides it. This makes the undergraduate decision useful beyond the first job search and reduces the chance of discovering a missing prerequisite after graduation.
