Can You Stay and Work in Bulgaria After Graduation?

Eligible graduates can apply for a separate stay of up to nine months, with job-seeker registration and a limited work route.

For an eligible third-country national who completed full-time higher education in Bulgaria, the law provides a separate graduate route: register as a job-seeker with the Employment Agency within seven working days after finishing the course, then apply for a new prolonged-residence permit for up to nine months. Under the Labour Migration and Labour Mobility Act, this graduate route also allows the person to seek and start work during the nine-month period, subject to the registration requirement.

This is a time-limited, conditional route—not permanent residence and not an automatic renewal of the student permit. The Ministry of Interior’s consolidated Foreigners Act text says the residence application is made at least 30 days before the authorised stay expires, includes specified documents and proof of course completion, and is decided within up to 30 days. Contact the Migration Directorate and Employment Agency early to confirm the sequence and your dates.

The route has two separate steps

Step What the law says What to do
Register as a job-seeker Apply to the Employment Agency within seven working days after completing full-time study. Keep the application receipt and make the deadline part of your graduation plan.
Request post-study residence An eligible student residence holder may apply for a separate permit of up to nine months. The application must be filed at least 30 days before the authorised residence expires. Ask Migration which local office and current form apply; submit the specified documents, including university proof that study is complete.
Start work Article 38(2) of the Labour Migration Act gives student graduates the rights described in Article 36(3): during the nine-month route they may seek and start work, subject to the Employment Agency registration condition. Confirm that you have completed the required registration and residence steps before relying on the route; keep written evidence.
Continue beyond the route The graduate period is limited. A longer-term job or stay needs the applicable employment and residence basis. Have the employer and Migration Directorate identify the permit category and application timing before the graduate period ends.

The nine months do not begin as an open-ended extension of student status. The statutory text ties the period to completing study and the student residence route, while the application has its own deadline and evidence requirements. A job offer does not replace the registration or residence application, and a pending application should not be assumed to authorise a stay or job unless the authorities confirm that in your case.

Start the process before your final semester ends

First ask your university what document it issues to certify that your course is complete, and which date it treats as completion. Next, contact the Employment Agency about registering as a job-seeker and the Migration Directorate about the separate residence application. Use the date on your residence document to work back from the statutory 30-day filing deadline; do not wait until the final day to resolve translations, forms or appointment availability.

The Migration Directorate checks whether the job-seeker application was submitted within seven working days, according to the Foreigners Act. The law provides for a decision within up to 30 days of the residence application. These are statutory periods, not a promise that a particular application will be approved. Keep your passport valid, maintain any required insurance and accommodation evidence, and retain receipts and official correspondence.

Read the EU summary alongside Bulgarian law

The European Commission’s Bulgaria student page contains both a general statement that student residence ends when study ends and a specific nine-month post-study route. The Ministry of Interior’s consolidated Foreigners Act text gives the more precise application pathway: an eligible graduate may apply for a separate permit of up to nine months, subject to the job-seeker registration and filing deadline. Do not read the general statement as an automatic ban on applying for this specific route—or read the nine-month route as automatic student-permit extension. The application and the underlying facts matter.

The same Commission summary says a graduate who wishes to work must apply for a work permit under the conditions applicable to other non-EU nationals. Bulgarian Labour Migration Act Article 38(2), however, extends to student graduates the specific nine-month seek-and-start-work rights in Article 36(3), provided they register with the Employment Agency within seven business days. Read together, these rules describe a limited graduate transition; they do not grant an indefinite right to take any job. For work beyond the special period, the employer and authorities must identify the suitable permit route.

A degree and a job offer do not settle every requirement

Some occupations are regulated and require professional recognition, licensing, language evidence or registration separate from immigration permission. Check the Bulgarian regulated-professions information and the competent professional regulator for the location where you intend to practise. Employers may also have to complete labour-market procedures specific to the job and permit category.

Do not assume that a Bulgarian degree guarantees a job, sponsorship, a particular salary or permanent residence. Build your budget around funds already secured, and assess an offer by its written contract, salary after deductions, location, hours and fit with your qualification.

Graduation checklist

  • Confirm the official completion date and request the university’s completion document.
  • Apply to register as a job-seeker with the Employment Agency within seven working days of course completion; keep proof of submission.
  • Check the expiry date on your current residence permission and the statutory 30-day filing deadline.
  • Ask Migration Directorate which application form and supporting documents are currently required for the separate permit of up to nine months.
  • Do not treat the application itself or the job offer as proof of approval; confirm your lawful stay and work status with the authorities.
  • Before the graduate period ends, identify and apply for the employment and residence route that fits the job.
  • Check professional recognition if the intended occupation is regulated.

Can I stay in Bulgaria after my course ends?

Eligible graduates with the required student residence basis may apply for a separate prolonged-residence permit for up to nine months. It is not automatic: apply at least 30 days before your authorised stay expires and complete the job-seeker registration within seven working days after finishing the course.

Can I work during the nine-month period?

The Labour Migration and Labour Mobility Act gives student graduates the rights in Article 36(3), which include seeking and starting work within nine months after completion if the Employment Agency registration condition is met. Follow the separate residence process and confirm your particular case with Migration and the Employment Agency.

Does my student residence card automatically continue for nine months?

No. The job-search period requires an application and registration steps; it is not an automatic extension of every student card. Ask the Migration Directorate and your university which documents, deadlines and residence category apply to your graduation date. Do not let the current card expire while waiting for a separate decision.

Is the route available to every graduate?

The legislation describes a route for a third-country national who held the relevant student residence basis and completed full-time study at a Bulgarian higher-education institution. Nationality, residence history, completion evidence and deadlines matter; confirm your eligibility with the authorities.

Does this route give permanent residence or a permanent work permit?

No. It is a temporary period to seek work or start work under the applicable conditions, not permanent status. A later employment residence route requires its own eligibility and application. Confirm the transition before your current residence permission ends. Ask which application must follow if an eligible employer offers work.
