Medicine vs Pharmacy in Egypt: Compare the Programme and the Work You Want to Do

Compare Cairo University KAF medicine with E-JUST PharmD by language, curriculum and admission route; ask both for current fees.

Medicine and pharmacy are different professional degrees. To make the distinction concrete, this guide compares Cairo University’s Kasr Al Ainy French (KAF) medicine programme with E-JUST’s undergraduate PharmD route. They are examples from different institutions, not a national comparison of every medical or pharmacy course in Egypt.

Cairo University KAF: a French-language medical degree

Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine describes KAF as a five-year programme of ten semesters and 314 credit points. French is used for teaching and assessment. Its published curriculum includes biomedical foundations, mechanisms and treatment of disease, infectious disease, immunology and pathology, early patient encounters, electives and clinical learning. Assessments include written, practical and workplace-based methods.

The university says international applicants are considered through a proposal by the Ministry’s Central Administration for Expatriates. The programme page does not publish a current international tuition schedule. Applicants should confirm French proficiency, clinical-language expectations, current charges and the handbook for their intake.

E-JUST PharmD: medicines, science and pharmacy practice

E-JUST’s undergraduate admissions page describes an English-taught Pharmacy faculty and a PharmD award. It presents learning across science, clinical and research areas, with practical and clinical exposure, public health and pharmaceutical innovation. The page says Pharmacy applicants from the Science stream take an entrance examination covering English, mathematics, logical thinking, biology and chemistry. Check the current admission cycle and exact subject requirements with the university.

The same page lists application and examination charges but does not show an annual tuition amount in the tuition section inspected for this guide. Do not infer a price from those administrative fees. Request an itemized current PharmD schedule, including any additional laboratory or placement charges.

Which fits your interests?

Medicine is the route to medical diagnosis and treatment, followed by the licensing steps required in the jurisdiction where you plan to work. Pharmacy focuses on medicines and their safe development, supply or use; the permitted professional roles also depend on local registration rules. Neither degree automatically grants the right to practise in another country.

Before deciding, compare the exact award, duration, language, admissions prerequisites, clinical or laboratory work, cost and regulator requirements. KAF’s French-medium structure may be a poor fit if you need English instruction. E-JUST’s page does not establish that every clinical or practical component is delivered in English, so ask for those details. A course title alone cannot answer which professional path is right for you.

Is pharmacy a shorter degree than medicine in Egypt? These two official pages do not provide enough directly comparable duration information to answer that nationally. Ask each institution for its current programme plan.

Which costs less? Neither cited programme page supplies a comparable current total tuition figure. Request written, intake-specific fee schedules.

Can a PharmD graduate work as a doctor? A PharmD is a pharmacy qualification, not a medical degree. Professional registration and scope depend on the destination regulator.

Compare the work, not only the degree names

Medicine and pharmacy ask students to solve different problems. The KAF description centres on understanding illness, examining patients and developing clinical reasoning within a French-medium medical curriculum. E-JUST presents pharmacy study around medicines, pharmaceutical sciences, research and pharmacy practice. Before choosing, think about which day-to-day work attracts you: assessing symptoms and managing patient care, or understanding how medicines are designed, prepared, evaluated and used safely. These are broad professional distinctions, not a promise that any particular job will be available after graduation.

Look closely at the teaching environments too. KAF describes patient encounters and clinical learning, but applicants should verify hospitals, supervision, patient-contact language and rotation sequence for their own cohort. E-JUST describes practical and clinical exposure, but the programme summary alone does not reveal the schedule, placement sites or exact language used in each setting. Request the detailed study plan and ask for a sample weekly timetable. A phrase such as “clinical exposure” can mean different amounts and types of supervised activity.

Check entry readiness and language

For KAF, the central question is whether you can study and be assessed in French. Ask what proficiency evidence is accepted and how the faculty evaluates applicants referred through the Central Administration for Expatriates. For E-JUST, the published admissions page identifies an entrance examination and subjects for Pharmacy applicants from the Science stream. Confirm which school tracks and foreign credentials are eligible, the exam format, and whether preparation materials or a syllabus are available. Do not assume that the named subjects alone describe every applicant’s entry requirements.

Make a requirements table before preparing translations and certificates. Include secondary-school subjects and grades, language evidence, entrance examinations, transcript format, document certification, application deadline and who receives the file. Ask each institution to confirm the list for your nationality and certificate. If you need an accommodation or a different assessment arrangement, ask the university early and keep the written answer. This reduces the chance of paying for a route that your academic record or language level cannot support.

Budget without inventing a winner

The sources cited for these examples do not provide comparable current tuition totals. Application or examination charges should not be mistaken for annual tuition. Request a fee letter for the same academic year from each university and ask it to itemize tuition, registration, laboratory or clinical charges, examination fees, insurance and any separate training costs. Ask whether charges vary by nationality or certificate route and what refund conditions apply if an application is unsuccessful.

Then estimate living costs using the actual campus and placement addresses. Include rent, utilities, food, transport, books, equipment, medical coverage and return travel. Keep one-off setup costs separate from monthly expenses and retain a reserve for exchange-rate changes. A five-year programme and a longer route can have very different total costs even if their annual fees appear similar. Use written university figures where available and clearly mark your own estimates as planning assumptions.

Before committing, check the professional regulator in the country where you plan to practise. For medicine, ask about degree recognition, internship and licensing examinations. For pharmacy, ask about the accepted qualification, supervised practice, language requirements and registration process. A PharmD title may have different regulatory treatment across countries, and an institution’s programme page cannot decide that question for another jurisdiction. If you may move again after graduation, check both the first destination and the likely later destination.
