Can You Stay and Work in Belgium After Graduation?

Belgium’s orientation year gives an eligible non-EU graduate up to 12 months to look for work or prepare a lawful self-employed activity after study.

Belgium’s orientation year gives an eligible non-EU graduate up to 12 months to look for work or prepare a lawful self-employed activity after study. It is not an automatic extension and cannot be renewed. A graduate with a recognised Belgian qualification of at least qualification level 5 normally applies through the municipality of residence no later than 15 days before the student residence permit expires. A graduate with an eligible foreign EU qualification who completed a mobility period in Belgium follows a different route and normally applies through the Belgian embassy or consulate in the country of residence within three months of obtaining the diploma. Typical evidence includes passport, recognised diploma, study residence or mobility evidence, health insurance and sufficient means. An Annex 15 confirms that an in-country application is pending; it is not final approval. Verify the latest Immigration Office rules before applying.

Check whether your study route qualifies

The official orientation-year requirements describe eligibility for a non-EU national who resided in Belgium and was registered at a Belgian higher-education institution, or who stayed in Belgium for study as part of a mobility programme.

Eligible Belgian awards include an associate degree, bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate or doctoral qualification. A foreign qualification can be used when the graduate completed an eligible Belgian mobility period, such as part of an Erasmus Mundus route.

Understand the required official channel

A graduate with a Belgian diploma applies at the municipality where they live. Official guidance says the application must be filed at the latest 15 days before the student residence permit expires. Institution student services may help explain the local procedure.

A graduate using a foreign diploma and Belgian mobility period normally applies through the Belgian embassy or consulate in the country of residence within three months after obtaining the diploma. Do not swap these channels.

Prepare the main evidence categories

For a Belgian diploma route, official guidance lists:

  • valid passport;

  • proof of a recognised Belgian qualification at least at qualification level 5;

  • Belgian residence permit based on study;

  • proof of health insurance;

  • proof of sufficient means.

The mobility route adds proof of the recognised EU qualification and Belgian study-mobility period. The Immigration Office and application authority may specify exact formats or further evidence.

Do not miss the residence-permit deadline

The orientation year should be planned before graduation. Order diploma or completion evidence early, check the residence-card expiry and ask the municipality for appointment availability.

A late diploma ceremony does not automatically extend student residence. Ask what provisional completion evidence is accepted and keep the written response.

Understand the Annex 15

For an in-country application, the municipality can issue an Annex 15 after the student residence permit expires. It confirms that the orientation-year application is ongoing. It is not a decision approving the A card.

The 12-month period includes time covered by the Annex 15 and the orientation-year A card. It does not restart when the physical card is collected.

Work access during the orientation year

Official guidance on orientation-year rights states that an Annex 15 holder for the pending orientation-year application has unlimited access to the Belgian labour market and can work full-time while waiting. The orientation-year A card continues that access within the total 12-month period.

Confirm that the document is the correct Annex 15 for this application and that the employer understands it. Keep copies of the application and employment records.

Show that you are using the year for its purpose

The government may ask for evidence of genuine job-search efforts or steps toward a lawful independent activity. Keep applications, interview invitations, career-service appointments, business planning and professional-registration work.

Do not create false applications or claim a business that does not exist. The residence can be ended if the graduate cannot show real efforts.

Treat the record as a simple monthly log rather than a last-minute bundle. Note the role or business step, date, organisation, result and next action, then keep the supporting email or document. This also makes it easier to see whether language skills, professional recognition or a missing technical credential is limiting progress while there is still time to respond.

Plan sufficient means and insurance

Applicants need health insurance and proof of sufficient resources under the current rules. The orientation year does not carry a right to Belgian unemployment benefits, and seeking government financial support can affect the temporary residence.

Build a 12-month job-search budget covering rent, insurance, transport and professional costs. A future salary is not evidence until the job and work route are real.

Review that budget each month so a slow search does not become an avoidable residence or housing crisis.

Moving from orientation year to work status

The orientation year creates time to find a qualifying path; it is not itself a permanent work permit. Before the 12 months end, a graduate who finds work or establishes a business must satisfy the rules for the appropriate employment or self-employed residence.

Employer sponsorship, salary thresholds, professional recognition and regional procedures may matter. Start the change of status early and use the competent authority’s current instructions.

Orientation-year mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the year begins only when the A card arrives.

  • Applying after the student residence has expired.

  • Treating Annex 15 as final approval.

  • Keeping no evidence of job search or business preparation.

  • Relying on unemployment benefits or unconfirmed income.

  • Waiting until the final month to change to a work route.

What to verify before you decide

  • Your qualification, Belgian registration or mobility eligibility.

  • The correct municipality or diplomatic application channel.

  • The deadline relative to residence expiry or diploma date.

  • Accepted proof of diploma, insurance and sufficient means.

  • Work rights attached to the specific temporary document.

  • The next employment or self-employed residence route.

Review the Belgium country hub, inspect the live programme catalogue, understand how Univs works, and consult the career and study guides. The orientation-year request itself must still follow the competent municipality or diplomatic route, and post-study possibilities should be verified before they influence a degree decision.

How long is Belgium’s orientation year?

Belgium’s orientation year lasts up to 12 months for an eligible graduate. The period includes the time documented by the relevant Annex 15 and the A card, rather than adding separate extra months. Check your own application date and document validity with the municipality and Immigration Office.

Can the orientation year be extended?

No. Official guidance states that the 12-month A-card period for the orientation year cannot be extended. Use the year to seek an eligible job or establish a business, and identify the next residence category early. Confirm the current deadline and evidence before your temporary status ends.

Can I work full-time?

Yes. Official guidance allows unlimited labour-market access during the valid orientation-year period, including while the relevant Annex 15 confirms an application is pending. This permission is temporary and does not guarantee a later residence category. Confirm that your document remains valid and start the next application in time.

Does Annex 15 mean the permit is approved?

No. Annex 15 confirms that an application is ongoing; it is not proof that the residence permit has been approved. Follow the municipality’s instructions, keep evidence of your application and wait for the formal decision. Ask the Immigration Office what activities are permitted while the file is pending.

Can an Erasmus Mundus graduate qualify?

Potentially. An Erasmus Mundus graduate may qualify if the foreign qualification and Belgian mobility period meet the official conditions. The application channel and evidence matter, so check the current Immigration Office guidance and ask the university which documents prove the Belgian study component.

Does the orientation year guarantee a long-term work permit?

No. The orientation year is temporary and does not guarantee a long-term work permit. Before it ends, the graduate must meet the requirements for an appropriate employment or self-employed residence route. Ask the prospective employer and Immigration Office which category applies and when the application must be filed.
