Can You Stay and Work in Cyprus After Graduation?

Cyprus has an official post-study route under which an eligible graduate may apply for a residence permit for up to 12 months to seek employment or set up a business.

The Republic of Cyprus publishes a post-study residence route for some third-country graduates, for up to 12 months to seek employment or establish a business. The Migration Department’s guidance limits it to graduates who completed at least EQF level 7 (master’s or higher) and whose proposed employment or business corresponds to the level of studies completed. It is an application route, not an automatic extension or unrestricted work permission.

Geographic scope: The immigration and student-work guidance below concerns the Republic of Cyprus, where the Republic’s authorities exercise effective control. It does not establish entry, residence or employment rules for institutions or stays in the northern part of the island; check the relevant provider and competent authority there.

The post-study route at a glance

Is there a route? The Migration Department describes a graduate application route. Your eligibility and timing.
Who qualifies? Current Migration Department text specifies completed study at EQF 7 or higher (master’s or above), with proposed employment/business corresponding to the completed study level. Confirm exact qualification, completion evidence and fit with the proposed activity.
How long? Up to 12 months, on application and subject to legal conditions. Actual permit dates, filing deadline and conditions.
Purpose? Seek employment or set up a business. Permitted activities while searching.
Is it automatic? No; a relevant application and legal conditions apply. Documents, decision and appeal rights.
Does it guarantee work? No. Employer, occupation and later permit route.
What comes next? A qualifying work, business or other basis may be needed. Rules in force when the transition occurs.

Use the official wording, not a marketing label

“Post-study work visa” is a common search phrase, but the official student page describes a residence permit after studies for a maximum of 12 months to seek employment or set up a business. This distinction matters: permission to search is not necessarily unrestricted employment permission.

Ask the Migration Department what activity is allowed while the application is pending and after the permit is issued. Do not extrapolate from student part-time work rules.

Use the permit’s legal description in applications and conversations with employers. A recruiter may recognise the phrase “post-study work”, but the employer and authority need the actual document and conditions.

Confirm that your completed study qualifies

The published route is narrower than a generic graduate visa: the Migration Department’s wording specifies EQF level 7 or higher, meaning a master’s-level qualification or above. A bachelor’s degree alone does not meet that stated minimum. Obtain the final award or official completion letter and transcript, and ask the Department which evidence establishes the level and completion date.

Ask whether a foundation, short course, incomplete programme, distance course or qualification from another jurisdiction qualifies. Do not rely on the institution’s general careers brochure.

Confirm when the programme is legally considered complete: final assessment, senate approval, award date or graduation ceremony may be different dates. The application window may depend on one of them.

Keep completion evidence, transcripts and correspondence ready, but do not assume the graduation ceremony date is the date migration will use. Ask which event starts any application window and obtain the answer from the competent authority.

Protect the application window

Your student permit has an expiry date. Start research before graduation and ask when the post-study application can be filed. Record how an application affects lawful stay and travel while pending.

Delays in results, graduation documents or appointments should be raised early with the institution and authority. A late application can be difficult to repair.

Keep an expiry calendar with a conservative personal deadline. Include document request time and a route for correcting the name, date or qualification details on a completion letter.

Documents on the official graduate checklist

The Department’s job-searching or entrepreneurship checklist asks for a valid passport or travel document, Plan A health insurance, evidence of sufficient subsistence and repatriation resources, a Cyprus criminal-record certificate, medical examinations, qualification-completion evidence and a title deed or rental agreement. For students, the qualification evidence is a certificate of a master’s or higher degree; researchers have a separate host-entity completion certificate.

Read the document with the application form on the official forms page. Confirm certification, appointment, fee category and filing timing with the Department before your student status expires. The checklist does not state a fixed euro funds threshold or a universal filing deadline, so obtain those case requirements rather than borrowing a number from another country.

Build the application evidence

The live requirements should be confirmed, but plan for identity and current permit evidence, qualification completion, funds, insurance, address, application forms, fees and any career or business information the authority requests. Keep proof of submission and every request for further information.

Do not use a false job offer, business plan, address or bank statement. Misrepresentation can affect current and future immigration decisions.

Maintain a dated search record if the authority requests evidence of purpose: roles considered, applications, interviews, business research and advice. Record truthful activity without manufacturing volume.

Separate job search from the next residence basis

A graduate who finds a job still needs to check the lawful route for that employment. Employer, occupation, salary, qualifications and labour-market rules can matter. The 12-month search period does not guarantee conversion.

Ask the prospective employer whether it has confirmed the process with the competent authority. Do not begin unauthorised work or accept cash work while waiting.

Treat business setup as a regulated path

“Set up a business” does not mean every freelance or company activity is automatically permitted. Company registration, tax, social insurance, professional licensing, capital, immigration and active-work rules can differ.

Obtain qualified Cyprus business and immigration advice before spending money. A registered company alone may not grant the founder residence or work rights.

Plan alternatives without assuming failure

A balanced plan can include eligible further study, returning home, opportunities in another country under its rules, or a qualifying Cyprus work or business route. Compare deadlines before the student permit expires.

Keep recognition documents, diploma supplement, transcript, references and placement evidence. These support job and further-study applications even if you do not remain in Cyprus.

Avoid post-study mistakes and guarantees

  • Calling the 12-month maximum an automatic entitlement.

  • Waiting until the student permit expires.

  • Assuming search permission equals unrestricted work.

  • Taking a job before checking the next permit route.

  • Believing a job offer guarantees immigration approval.

  • Registering a company without checking active-work rights.

  • Relying on old student work rules after graduation.

  • Paying for a guaranteed job or permit.

What to verify before you decide

  • Your qualification and completion evidence fit the route.

  • The application window relative to student-permit expiry.

  • Documents, funds, insurance, address and fees.

  • Lawful status and travel while the case is pending.

  • Permitted activity during the search period.

  • Conditions for changing to a work or business basis.

  • Alternative further-study or departure dates.

  • Recognition and licensing evidence for the intended career.

Use Cyprus country information for general research and check high-stakes claims carefully. Your practical next step is an individual timeline confirmed by the Migration Department, not a recruiter’s employment promise.
