Cairo University vs Ain Shams for PharmD: How the Programmes Compare

Compare Cairo and Ain Shams PharmD structure, language and training; request written same-intake tuition quotes.

Cairo University and Ain Shams University both offer a mainstream Bachelor of Pharmacy (PharmD), so this is a closer comparison than treating every pharmacy track as interchangeable. Their published degree rules share a five-year academic phase and a later internship year, but they describe credit totals and practical training differently. The pages do not publish comparable current international tuition, so use them to compare study structure and request written, intake-specific quotes before making a budget decision.

At a glance

Decision point Cairo University — PharmD Ain Shams University — PharmD
Degree Bachelor of Pharmacy (PharmD), credit-hour system. Bachelor of Pharmacy (PharmD).
Academic phase Five academic years across ten semesters; the faculty lists 175 programme credits plus six university-requirement credits. Five academic years across ten semesters; the 2025 student guide lists 172 credits: 164 core, eight elective and four university-requirement credits.
Language English; the faculty allows some courses to be taught in Arabic with departmental and council approval. English; the faculty guide says some courses may be taught in Arabic if required.
Practical training 100 actual hours of initial field training after level three, then a nine-month, 36-week advanced training year. The 2025 guide calls the field requirement “100 credit hours” after level three, followed by a nine-month internship year with clinical rotations and a graduation project. Confirm how the faculty measures and schedules the field hours.
Entry Current 2026/27 PharmD form requests nationality, high-school certificate type and grades; the faculty’s programme rules refer to Supreme Council of Universities requirements. The form itself is not an offer or a complete eligibility decision. The 2025 guide says applicants need a high-school qualification meeting Supreme Council of Universities conditions, or may transfer from a similar accredited Egyptian or international programme subject to the applicable criteria.

What the course plans emphasize

Cairo publishes a semester-by-semester PharmD load table. Its opening year includes pharmaceutical analytical and organic chemistry, medicinal plants, cell biology, anatomy and physical pharmacy. Later listed courses include pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, hospital and community pharmacy, drug information, clinical pharmacy, pharmacoeconomics and advanced drug-delivery systems. This lets an applicant inspect the sequence and identify questions about laboratory, clinical and elective options before contacting the faculty.

Ain Shams’ 2025 student guide sets out the PharmD credit and training requirements and its course materials identify a core PharmD alongside a clinical track. The published guide is useful for checking workload, language, field training and internship expectations, but it does not provide the same semester-by-semester mainstream course table in the sections reviewed here. Ask the faculty for the current PharmD study plan and course specifications, then compare equivalent modules rather than relying on programme labels alone.

Admissions, language and student guidance

At Cairo, the public PharmD programme page points to the Supreme Council of Universities’ requirements. The current 2026/27 application form asks for nationality, high-school certificate type and grades; it does not by itself state a universal threshold for every certificate or confirm admission. Applicants with foreign credentials should ask the faculty and Cairo University how the certificate is evaluated and which nomination or document steps apply; the public form alone does not answer those questions.

Ain Shams’ 2025 guide describes high-school and transfer routes, but also leaves the applicable Council requirements as the governing rule. A transfer is not automatic: the guide says credit transfer follows Council criteria. Both faculties describe academic advisers who help students choose courses or navigate their study plan. That is useful academic guidance, but it should not be read as a promise of dedicated visa, housing, scholarship or employment support.

Both programme pages describe English as the main language while allowing that some instruction may be in Arabic. If you need an English-only experience, ask each faculty which courses, placements and student services use Arabic in your intended cohort. The published material does not guarantee that every practical setting or service will operate in English.

How to choose—and what to verify first

Cairo is easier to assess from its public mainstream programme pages if you want to inspect a detailed semester sequence, including later clinical-pharmacy and drug-information courses. Ain Shams’ 2025 guide clearly describes credit totals, supervised field training and a clinical-rotation internship, but you should request its current course-by-course PharmD plan to make a direct subject comparison. Neither profile alone establishes which route is academically stronger or better for your career.

The documents reviewed do not provide comparable current international tuition or a full living-cost budget. Request a written quote for the same entry year from both universities, including tuition by semester, mandatory fees, payment currency, refund rules and any separate charges for training or internship. Also confirm whether the stated credit and field-hour totals are calculated in the same way; Cairo specifies “actual hours,” while the Ain Shams guide uses “credit hours.”

Before accepting an offer, check the current degree title and training requirements with the faculty, and ask the pharmacy regulator in the country where you plan to practise whether it recognizes the qualification and internship. A PharmD title or university comparison does not itself guarantee professional registration abroad.

Make the two study plans comparable

Request the current semester plan from each faculty and map equivalent subjects in a spreadsheet. Include course name, credit value, required or elective status, laboratory component, assessment method and semester. Cairo’s public load table lets applicants follow the sequence in its plan, while the Ain Shams guide provides its own credit and training descriptions. Where the material uses different terms for practical training, ask the faculty to explain whether a number refers to clock hours, credit hours or a supervised placement period. Do not add unlike units together as though they measured the same workload.

Compare the required progression and the experience students actually receive. Ask how students are placed for field training, what supervision is provided, which settings are involved and how the faculty records completion. Confirm whether an internship year follows the academic phase and whether students must meet additional conditions before it begins. The printed duration alone does not tell an international applicant whether placements are guaranteed, where they occur or whether the student must arrange travel and housing.

Get written answers about international admission

For both universities, state your nationality, secondary-school certificate, graduation year and intended intake when asking for an eligibility assessment. Request confirmation of required science subjects, minimum marks, language expectations, Council of Universities steps, translation or legalisation rules and whether any entrance test applies. Cairo’s current form collects applicant details but should not be treated as an individual decision. Ain Shams’ guide sets out a general framework, while the faculty must confirm how it applies to your record and current cycle.

Ask for a full payment schedule before paying a deposit. A written quotation should separate tuition from application, registration, laboratory, examination, training and internship charges; state the billing currency and due dates; and explain refunds if admission or residence arrangements do not proceed. If the university cannot quote a later-year fee, ask how increases are approved and where the schedule will be published. Keep the response with the admission letter and save a copy of the version applicable to your cohort.

The better comparison depends on your goals. Cairo offers public semester-by-semester detail for course sequencing; Ain Shams’ guide makes its training requirements visible in a different format. Neither document alone establishes educational quality or an employment outcome. Talk with each faculty about teaching support, practical learning and student services, then use the destination regulator’s written rules to decide whether the award and training fit your intended career. If you do not yet know where you will practise, compare the likely regulators before treating either degree as a portable credential.
