EU, EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a visa but must register residence when staying beyond the applicable period. Non-EU students generally use a long-stay D visa for entry and, for longer study, a temporary residence permit for study. Admission does not itself grant immigration status. Apply through the competent Estonian mission or Police and Border Guard Board route, use the host institution's international office, and verify nationality-specific requirements immediately before travel. Additional checks, missing documents and appointment availability can extend the practical timeline, and permit, document, service or biometric fees may be separate. Never overstay existing permission and verify every current official payee before payment.

Valid passport and completed application with compliant photograph and biometrics where required.

Official admission or enrolment evidence from the Estonian higher-education institution.

Evidence of sufficient means; the current D-visa study benchmark is EUR 880 for each month of stay.

Health-insurance evidence valid in Estonia for the required period and coverage level.

Proof of accommodation or intended address when requested.

Travel and study-purpose evidence, including prior qualifications or tuition arrangements where requested.

Additional nationality-, age- or case-specific documents, legalisation and translations required by the competent authority.
