Study in Hungary

Hungary combines an ECTS-compatible European degree structure, a long higher-education tradition, a large foreign-language programme selection and university cities with different cost profiles. Students should compare the exact programme, tuition, accreditation and recognition outcome rather than choosing only by country or ranking.

The current consolidated Annex 1 to Act CCIV of 2011 lists 64 state-recognized Hungarian higher-education institutions: 30 universities, 12 universities of applied sciences and 22 colleges.

Many institutions accept international applicants, including ELTE, the universities of Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Miskolc, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Corvinus, Semmelweis, Óbuda, Széchenyi István and numerous specialist institutions. Availability is programme-specific.

Yes. The national Study in Hungary portal reports more than 700 courses in English, German, French and other foreign languages. Confirm the exact teaching and examination language for the selected intake.

Fees vary widely. Representative current published fees start around EUR 3,400 per year for some non-EU programmes, while medicine and dentistry can be around USD 16,750–17,500 per year. Always use the institution’s current written fee schedule.

A practical planning range is about HUF 230,000–530,000 per month excluding tuition. Housing choice and city create the largest difference; dormitory accommodation may reduce the total, while a private Budapest flat may increase it.

Choose a recognized institution and programme, check entry and language requirements, submit the official application, complete any assessment, receive the admission offer and then follow the correct immigration, insurance and enrolment steps.

Common documents include a passport, diploma, transcripts, accepted translations, language evidence, CV and motivation letter. References, portfolios, medical records and entrance-test results depend on the programme.

Non-EEA nationals staying for full-time study normally need a residence permit for the purpose of studies. For visa-required nationalities, applying for that permit abroad also includes the entry-visa request; a separate visa application is not normally required.

NDGAP states a 15-day procedural-administration period and a decision on the merits within 60 days. Missing-document and other procedural periods do not count toward those limits, so applicants should apply early.

The EU Immigration Portal lists EUR 110 at a Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission, HUF 39,000 for an in-person application in Hungary, HUF 24,000 through Enter Hungary and HUF 23,000 for an extension. Exemptions may apply.

Yes, students must have suitable healthcare coverage for the applicable university and immigration route. EU/EEA, scholarship and self-funded students may use different arrangements, so confirm the exact coverage before travel.

Current U.S. travel advice places Hungary at Level 1, exercise normal precautions. Opportunistic theft can occur in tourist areas and transport hubs, so students should follow current official advice and normal city precautions.

Major routes include Stipendium Hungaricum, the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship, Erasmus+, CEEPUS and institution-level awards. Eligibility, covered costs and deadlines differ and must be checked against the current call.

For eligible non-degree, bachelor, master and one-tier master students it provides tuition-free study, HUF 43,700 monthly living contribution, a dormitory place or HUF 40,000 monthly housing contribution, and medical coverage. Doctoral stipends differ. These contributions may not cover all living costs.

Possibly. The receiving institution evaluates the transcript, course content, learning outcomes and ECTS compatibility. Credit transfer is not automatic; request a written preliminary decision.

A graduate who still holds a valid study residence permit may apply for a residence permit to seek a job or start a business if the intended activity is suitable for the completed level. Apply before the study permit expires.

Current NDGAP guidance states that a third-country national holding or applying for a study residence permit is generally not granted family reunification, subject to a narrow exception for a child born in Hungary during the permit’s validity. Obtain case-specific advice.

No. EEA and Swiss nationals use EU free-movement and registration rules rather than the third-country study-residence route. They should still complete the required local registration, university and health-insurance steps.
