How to Choose a University in Belgium: What Matters Beyond Rankings?

To check whether a Belgian higher-education option is legitimate, first identify the education community responsible for the institution.

To check whether a Belgian higher-education option is legitimate, first identify the education community responsible for the institution. In Flanders, verify the institution through official Flemish higher-education sources and check programme decisions through NVAO, the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders. In French-speaking Belgium, use the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s recognised institution and official programme sources. Then confirm the exact award, campus and current programme—not just the provider name. Foreign-diploma equivalence is a separate question handled through community services and NARIC routes, while professional recognition belongs to the regulator for the profession and country where you plan to work. A recognised institution does not make every short course a recognised degree, and a recognised Belgian degree does not guarantee licensing abroad. Save the official records and ask for clarification before paying.

Recognition checks at a glance

Question Responsible source What it does not prove
Is the institution recognised? Responsible Belgian education community That every advertised course is a recognised degree
Is a Flemish programme accredited? NVAO decisions and official registers Professional licensing in another country
Does my foreign diploma have an equivalent level? Community equivalence/NARIC route Automatic admission to a programme
Can I practise a regulated profession? Relevant professional regulator That academic admission alone is sufficient
Does the route support student residence? Belgian Immigration Office Guaranteed visa approval

Do not begin with rankings or advertising

A ranking, agent page or social post can help you discover a name, but it is not a recognition decision. Belgium assigns education to the Communities, and equivalence uses a separate route (Belgium.be). Begin with official education sources. Search the legal institution name and confirm that the campus and award belong to it.

Watch for trading names, partner centres and validation arrangements. Ask which legal institution awards the diploma and whether the exact programme is authorised in Belgium.

Identify the education community

Belgium’s Flemish, French and German-speaking communities have responsibility for education (Belgium.be). A national “Belgium universities” list can hide this structure. Brussels institutions may belong to different community systems.

The community determines which programme register, quality body and equivalence route is relevant. If you cannot identify it, ask the institution for the official public record.

Verify a Flemish institution and programme

Study in Flanders lists the recognised Flemish higher-education landscape and degree structures (official overview) and links to official institution and programme information. Its foreign-language finder can confirm that a programme is presented by a Flemish higher-education institution.

NVAO publishes decisions and reports for Flemish institutions and programmes (institution register). NVAO describes programme accreditation as the official conclusion that a programme meets minimum requirements for quality and level after external assessment. Search the exact institution and programme, then read the status and decision date.

Verify French-speaking higher education

Wallonie-Bruxelles Campus describes higher-education institutions in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (official overview). It distinguishes universities, university colleges and schools of arts and provides programme discovery and enrolment information.

Confirm that the institution appears in the official system and that the programme is part of its current offer. If a provider claims an external or foreign award, verify the awarding institution and recognition route in both jurisdictions.

Check the exact credential

A recognised institution can offer degrees, advanced degrees, postgraduate certificates, microcredentials, continuing education and short courses. These do not all have the same qualification-framework status or progression rights.

Record the official award title, ECTS total, level and awarding body. Ask whether the course leads to a degree, certificate of attendance or another credential. Do not infer degree status from duration or marketing language.

Keep a short verification note with the official record URL, programme name, campus, language, decision date and date checked. If a claim appears only in an agent brochure or social post, treat it as unconfirmed until the institution and responsible authority support it.

Understand what NVAO accreditation means

NVAO accreditation in Flanders confirms that a programme meets the defined quality and level framework. It is a powerful verification source, but it does not promise admission, scholarship, employability or licensing.

Check whether the decision applies to the current programme version, location and award. A similarly named programme at another institution needs its own record.

Foreign qualification equivalence is an entry question

If you earned a diploma abroad, Belgium.be directs applicants to community equivalence and NARIC services. A formal statement can establish the value or level of prior study in the relevant community.

The receiving institution may still decide whether your subject knowledge fits the new programme. Equivalence and academic admission are related but not interchangeable.

Professional recognition is a future-work question

Medicine, dentistry, nursing, teaching, architecture and other regulated fields may require recognition by a professional authority. The relevant regulator may be in Belgium or the country where you intend to practise.

Ask about language, examinations, supervised practice, curriculum content and document requirements before enrolment. A programme’s academic recognition is not a promise that another country will issue a licence.

Recognition and immigration interact

The Belgian Immigration Office distinguishes study at recognised higher education from study at an unrecognised private provider. The residence route and legal basis can differ. A provider’s claim that it can “arrange the visa” is not official recognition.

Confirm the institution category before paying tuition or blocked funds. Immigration authorities assess the whole case and do not guarantee approval because a school has accepted a student.

Red flags in recognition claims

  • The institution refuses to identify the legal awarding body.

  • A generic “international accreditation” replaces an official Belgian record.

  • The programme name, campus or degree differs across documents.

  • Recognition is promised in every country and profession.

  • An old or unrelated accreditation decision is presented as current.

  • Payment is demanded before the official status can be verified.

What to verify before you decide

  • The legal institution name, community, campus and awarding body.

  • The current programme title, level, ECTS and official status.

  • The date and scope of any accreditation decision.

  • Whether your prior diploma needs equivalence or individual assessment.

  • The future professional regulator’s licensing requirements.

  • The immigration route for the institution and programme type.

Is NVAO the accreditation body for all of Belgium?

No. NVAO accredits higher-education programmes in Flanders and the Netherlands, while French-speaking Belgium uses its own recognised-institution and quality framework. First identify the Community responsible for the provider, then verify the legal awarding body and course status through the relevant official register before paying fees.

Is every programme at a recognised institution a degree?

No. A recognised institution can offer degrees as well as certificates, microcredentials and continuing-education courses. The institution’s status does not make every offering a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Check the exact credential title, level, awarding body and credit structure on the official course page and written offer.

Does NARIC decide university admission?

No. NARIC and equivalence services assess qualifications, while the university decides admission to a specific programme. A comparability statement may support an application but does not ensure acceptance. Ask the institution whether it requires an external assessment, a formal equivalence decision or its own review of your documents.

Will a Belgian degree be recognised in my home country?

Possibly, but the authority in your home country decides whether the exact Belgian award is accepted for further study or work. A regulated profession may require separate exams, supervised practice or licensing. Contact the receiving university or regulator with the institution, programme, campus and study mode before enrolling.

Can a private school operate without being a recognised university?

Private education providers may operate, but the credential and its official status can differ from a recognised university degree. Confirm who awards the qualification, which authority recognises that provider and how the credential is treated for residence and future study. Obtain those details in writing before paying a non-refundable fee.

Does accreditation guarantee a visa?

No. Accreditation or recognition concerns the education provider or programme; immigration authorities make a separate decision on the complete visa application. Admission, financial evidence, identity documents and other requirements still apply. Follow the current Immigration Office and diplomatic-post instructions for your nationality and intended study period.

Editorial note

Requirements can change and may differ by institution, programme and applicant. Recheck current university and government guidance before paying or travelling.

For comparisons, we assess the stated student brief, current route availability, discovery breadth, application ownership, progress visibility, support, costs and duplicate-application risk. Univs publishes this page and may have commercial relationships with institutions; those relationships do not determine admission decisions. Read our editorial standards.
