Master of Applied Genetics (MSc)
Program Overview
Applied Genetics at Ilia State University (School of Natural Sciences and Medicine) is an English-taught, 120 ECTS (4-semester) Master's programme. It prepares a new generation of researchers who use contemporary molecular and genetic methods to study biodiversity, ecology, evolutionary biology, agriculture and medicine. From 2026–27 it follows a 60+60 model: Master of Applied Genetics after Part I and Master of Research in Applied Genetics after Part II.

Goals, Outcomes & Methods
Prepare researchers who apply contemporary molecular-genetic methods — DNA extraction, PCR isolation of genes, sequencing including second-generation and environmental-DNA methods — together with bioinformatics and theoretical population biology to current problems in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, agriculture and medicine, and who can process complex data, interpret results and conduct independent research.
Graduates can plan and carry out genetic research on animals, plants and humans with modern laboratory methods and equipment; analyse population-genetic structure and evolutionary questions; process sequence data with bioinformatics tools; interpret and report results; and pursue doctoral study or applied genetics careers.
Lectures, seminars, guided discussion, case and problem-based learning, individual and group assignments, presentations, practical or laboratory sessions, independent study, digital learning resources, and project or research supervision.
Program Structure & Plan
4 semesters, 120 ECTS. From 2026–27: Part I (2 semesters, 60 ECTS) — Master of Applied Genetics; Part II (2 semesters, 60 ECTS) — Master of Research in Applied Genetics. Students start their own research projects in animal, plant or human genetics from the second semester, with access to research institutes and partners such as the Jülich Research Centre (Germany).

University Accreditation & Recognition
Program Accreditation & Recognition
Program offered within Ilia State University (ISU)'s authorized higher-education framework. Applicants should verify the current program-level accreditation status and any profession-specific recognition with the university and relevant regulator.
Students who require a visa to study at an authorized Georgian institution normally apply for a D3 immigration visa. The correct entry route depends on citizenship and legal residence, so applicants must check Georgia’s eConsul eligibility tool and the responsible embassy before applying. Students staying long term may also need a study residence permit after arrival.
