EEA/EFTA citizens generally follow free-movement registration rules rather than the non-EEA student residence-permit route. Most non-EEA students need a residence permit for recognized full-time study. First obtain unconditional admission to an eligible study route, then submit the original paper application and complete evidence to the Directorate of Immigration. Applicants who require a visa generally may not be in Iceland while the first permit is submitted or processed. Admission, tuition payment and housing do not guarantee a permit. Preparation may require criminal records, translations, insurance and financial evidence. The older national student portal shows July and November dates, but the current Directorate deadlines control. Separate bank, certification, insurance, medical, travel and residence-card costs may apply.
Completed and signed original student residence-permit application form.
Processing-fee payment receipt with the required payer and applicant details.
One compliant 35x45 mm passport photograph.
Colour copy of the passport identity and signature pages; passport validity must cover the required period.
Qualifying criminal-record certificate and translation where required.
Health-insurance certificate valid in Iceland for the required first period and minimum coverage.
Original or accepted evidence of secure financial support for the requested permit period.
Unconditional confirmation of full-time admission, normally 30 ECTS per semester, plus any route-specific evidence.
Checked 22 August 2026: no fixed days are promised. Apply by 1 May for autumn or 1 October for spring. Criminal records, translations, insurance and financial evidence add preparation time; current Directorate deadlines control.
Checked 22 August 2026: the student residence-permit fee is ISK 70,000. Bank, translation, certification, insurance, medical, travel and card costs may be separate; unpaid applications are returned and the fee is not refunded after withdrawal.
