University Admission Requirements in Bulgaria: Grades, Qualifications, and Documents

Master and doctoral applicants need additional degree, subject or research evidence.

Bulgaria university entry requirements depend on study level, programme, institution, teaching language, nationality and the country that issued the applicant’s qualification. The European Education Area’s Bulgaria profile lists a secondary-school diploma, transcript, language evidence, medical certificate, passport copy and application form as common starting documents (official overview); each university sets the binding checklist. Master and doctoral applicants need additional degree, subject or research evidence.

Many foreign documents must be certified and translated into Bulgarian, but the correct route depends on treaties and issuing-country rules. Use the Bulgaria study guide for orientation, then obtain the current programme checklist in writing. Do not apostille, legalise, translate or courier documents until the receiving university confirms the exact order and accepted format.

Application evidence at a glance

Decision point What the evidence supports What you must check
Identity Passport and photographs connect the file to the applicant. Validity, spelling, copy and photo format.
Academic Diploma and transcript show prior level and subjects. Eligibility, grades, prerequisites and recognition.
Language Evidence supports readiness for the teaching language. Accepted test, level, validity or university assessment.
Certification Apostille or legalisation may authenticate foreign documents. Country, treaty, authority and sequence.
Programme-specific Tests, portfolio, medical or research material can be required. Format, deadline, assessor and retake.

Match the qualification to the study level

A first-cycle applicant generally needs completed secondary education that gives access to higher education in the issuing country. A master applicant usually presents a recognised prior higher-education degree and diploma supplement or transcript. Doctoral admission may require a master-level award, research proposal, supervisor fit and evidence defined by the doctoral school.

Ask whether required subjects, grade thresholds or entrance exams apply. A broad “high school diploma accepted” statement does not establish eligibility for a selective or regulated programme.

Build a master list before touching the originals

Create one row per document: exact name, issuing authority, original or copy, certification, translation, age limit, number of copies, delivery route and deadline. Include passport, photographs, diploma, transcript, eligibility statement, application form, language evidence and any medical or programme item.

Use the university’s current checklist and written clarification. Compare other destinations through the Univs country directory, but never carry Bulgaria’s document assumptions into another country or institution.

Apostille and legalisation are route-specific

An apostille may apply when the relevant Hague Convention route is available; otherwise consular legalisation or a treaty-based exemption may apply. The university and competent authorities must confirm which route covers the issuing country and document.

Order matters. A translation made too early may not include certification text, while a notarised copy may not replace an original. Ask whether the translator must be sworn, whether certification occurs in Bulgaria or abroad, and how names should appear in Bulgarian and Latin script.

Language evidence is programme evidence

English-taught and Bulgarian-taught programmes can set different proof, level and assessment rules. Current institutions may accept named certificates, prior medium-of-instruction evidence or an internal test. A general claim that IELTS is unnecessary is not a universal rule.

Confirm the language of lectures, exams, placements and administration. Ask whether a preparatory course is optional or mandatory, how long it lasts, what it costs and whether it delays the degree start.

Recognition and admission should not be conflated

Recognition establishes how a foreign qualification is treated for a defined purpose; admission decides whether the student receives a place. NACID explains that for continuing education in Bulgaria, the rector of the chosen accredited higher-education institution can be the competent recognition authority.

Ask who starts the recognition process, what evidence is issued, whether originals are retained and how long the university advises allowing. A recognised qualification does not compel a programme to admit the applicant.

Keep the document file secure and auditable

Use clear scans, consistent filenames and a read-only archive. Send sensitive documents only through the verified university or authorised route. Redact information when asking an informal adviser a general question; they rarely need a full passport or complete academic record.

Save the submission confirmation, courier tracking and payment receipt. Read how Univs works before sharing documents through any available platform process, and understand who can access them.

Document status labels that help

Evidence type How to use it
Required The current university checklist or authority instruction explicitly asks for the item in your route.
Common but unconfirmed The item appears in general or other-institution guidance and must still be checked.
Accepted The receiving body confirms the exact document, certification and translation are usable for the named file.

Document mistakes that are expensive to repeat

  • Certifying or translating before confirming the correct international route.

  • Submitting a diploma without the complete transcript or supplement.

  • Using inconsistent names or dates across passport and academic records.

  • Assuming a language waiver applies to every programme.

  • Sending originals to an unverified intermediary.

  • Failing to retain exact copies, receipts and delivery evidence.

When a requirement is unclear, pause and ask. Replacing an academic original or repeating legalisation is usually slower than obtaining one precise answer.

What to verify before you decide

  • Eligibility of your award and any subject or grade prerequisites.

  • Exact diploma, transcript and right-to-study evidence.

  • Accepted language proof, level, validity and test alternatives.

  • Original, copy, notarisation, apostille or legalisation requirement.

  • Bulgarian translation provider and certification sequence.

  • Medical, portfolio, research, exam or other programme evidence.

  • Secure delivery, deadline, fee and document-return procedure.

Mark a document complete only after both content and format are confirmed. A correct certificate in the wrong legal form may still be unusable.

Send one document-format question sheet

Attach a blank matrix—never sensitive records—to your admissions question and ask the university to confirm each row. Then prepare the file once. Use the student guidance library for scanning and record-keeping habits, while treating the Bulgarian institution’s current response as the operative requirement.

What documents are needed for a Bulgaria university application?

Diploma, transcript, passport copy, form and language evidence are common. Medical, eligibility, portfolio, research or exam material may also apply. Ask the selected institution for the current list by programme and applicant category before translating or legalising documents. A faculty may add subject-specific evidence or examinations to that list.

Do documents need translation into Bulgarian?

Many institutions require Bulgarian translations for foreign documents, but the translator and certification sequence must be confirmed for the issuing country and route. Ask whether translation follows legalisation, which authority certifies it and whether the university accepts electronic copies initially.

Is an apostille always required?

No. Apostille, consular legalisation or treaty-based rules can apply. Ask the receiving institution or competent authority before proceeding. The correct route depends on where a document was issued and the rules in force for that document type. The country of issue and document purpose determine the acceptable authentication route.

Who recognises my previous qualification?

The competent body depends on purpose and level. NACID says the rector of the chosen accredited institution can be competent for recognition used to continue study. Ask the university whether it handles your qualification directly or requires a separate NACID procedure.

Can a university accept copies?

A university may use scans or certified copies at one stage and require originals later. Confirm format and return arrangements in writing. Keep clear scans and receipts, and do not send an irreplaceable original until you know how it will be handled.

What if my passport name differs from my diploma?

Tell the university before submission and ask what linking evidence or certified explanation is required. Do not silently edit document images. A marriage record, corrected passport or official name-change document may be needed depending on your circumstances. Use the issuing authority’s formal records to link the names across documents.
